Bengaluru: PU students to get 21 grace marks for mathematics

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Apr 22: The education department has decided to give 21 grace marks to second PU students in mathematics. For question Nos 3, 13, 16, 20, 24, 33, 45 and 49 b, they will earn full marks irrespective of whether their answers are right or not.

The department had been receiving demands for grace marks for questions which pertain to out of syllabus. Responding to the demand, primary and secondary education minister, Kimmane Ratnakar, had said that a committee of experts had been formed and that a decision would be taken based on its recommendation. The committee had opined that the question paper did not have any questions which were not from the text book.

Some mathematics teachers who have been entrusted with the work of evaluation of answer sheets said that they have been asked to give grace marks for the above eight questions, for all students who have attempted these questions. One of the lecturers said that for being eligible for grace marks, the student should have at least mentioned the question numbers in the answer sheets. Those who did not attempt the questions because they were tough will not get grace marks, he added.

One among them wondered what is the relevance of conducting examinations, if students are awarded 21 grace marks out of 100. "They could have passed all the students by announcing 25 grace marks," he commented sarcastically. When agreeing that mathematics question paper was a bit tough this time, he felt that there was no need to grant so many grace marks, as students who are able to get nine marks in normal course, can now score 30 marks because of the grace marks, and get pass marks in mathematics, he explained.

However, several lecturers strongly believe that the future of many students would have been affected if grace marks were not given, as the question paper had questions which were not from the text book.

I can see that this comment section's got a lot of butthurt people and jealous cbse students/teachers expressing their stern opposition against the decision. Your opinions are valid till a certain extent but let's just observe the situation from a student's point of view. This year's PU Board exams were in controversy from the beginning. The exam started off easy with the Computer and Biology exams.
This was followed by the tough maths exam. I agree that none of the questions were out of syllabus but the paper was actually lengthy and most of the questions were from outside the textbook.
Then came the Chemistry exam. That's right the Chemistry exam.
This could be the ultimate blunder in the whole history of the Karnataka PU board.
This was the first time I even heard of a re-exam paper getting leaked.
Those who studied all day and night with high expectations were devastated not once but twice. Who is to be blamed? Even if the culprit is punished the students are the ones who pay the price for someone's fault finally. The rest of the exams went along easy. But what about the damage caused to the students in the Chemistry and Maths exams? What about the future of all these students?
This was followed by the protests by the lecturers which demanded higher pays. This further lead to delay in results declaration and anxiety in all the students.
This year most of the things haven't gone right for the PU Board till now. But the real problems are just about to start. The valuation. This is where the PU Board failed last year and just lead to big problems.
I hope the PU Board proves me wrong.
Though even I don't fully support the decision for 21 grace marks, it could otherwise be considered as a compensation to all the students for the blunders caused by the Board.
It would seem like injustice to all those who worked really hard, there were another section of students who really were confident to score 100 on 100.
The latter group are more so it would be a wiser decision

Very strange decision!. If the questions were within syllabus, why are grace marks that too to the tune of 21 being awarded! ?. Is it just because it was tough!?. So there may be a demand every time questions are tough!!!. Some thing is fishy in the whole episode!!!

21 grace marks!!amazing why you even conduct exam? just give 40 grace marks to all, let everyone pass so that all those vacant engineering seats can be filled & the owners of private institutes be all happy & make money.
THE business of grace marks is nothing but mockery of hard working students.
DOES the PU-BOARD blindly issues question papers without due scrutiny, if they've done that sincerely then where's the scope for this virus called grace marks.
OUR education system's totally rotten & stinking, the very own central HR-min irani's laughable qualification tells how much importance modi's giving to this most important ministry.its just reduced to some bad joke.

Marks BHAGYA. Fantastic. Congratulations to all students. Now every students from other state, those who are especially weak in maths will say, "Wish I was born in Karnataka".
What a grace, first it was Question Paper leaks, now grace marks. Where is our education system heading towards??. On the One side parents are spending lakhs of rupees for education, on the other side govt. is giving leakages, graces. Very difficult to understand this education system. After all, these people are clowns. And when clowns rule us, what else we can expect??.

@Dev Kumar, for your kind information and knowledge, there are 4 core subjects and two languages. Student has to score above 35 in each subject to pass. Not only Mathematics. If a student in this batch scores 35% do you have any problem to recruit him in any international or national company? Officially he is s as “pass” by the exam conducting board. So who u are to comment something nonsense?
