Mangaluru: Water level in Thumbay dam dips, district administration briefs on arrangements

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, May 5: "Water availability in the Thumbay vented dam is currently 5.6 ft which is sufficient only for seven days. If the water is supplied once in three days, it can last for 21 days," said Mangalore City Corporation commissioner H N Gopalakrishna.

He was addressing a review meeting held to discuss water scarcity problem. The meeting was chaired by district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai at the DC's office here on Thursday May 5.

"In city, there are 174 borewells and 90 open wells. Out of the 90 open wells, 22 belong to the government and 14 are owned by individuals. MCC is using water from these wells to supply to the needy. MCC has also identified 41 open wells and has sent water samples for testing their purity. The reports of 13 open wells have come. Out of 13 wells, water from six wells can be used for drinking purpose and water from seven wells is not good for drinking. Another 13 wells are yet to be cleaned," he said.

Adding to this, mayor Harinath said, "Presently, MCC is providing water in tankers to those places where there is acute scarcity. Water is procured in 22 tankers throughout the city for all wards. And from Friday May 6 water will be supplied through 30 pickup trucks with water tanks."

DC AB Ibrahim directed MCC authorities to take possession of borewells used for the construction of new buildings. He furthered asked to take possession of private borewells and open wells to meet the drinking water scarcity.

DC Ibrahim asked the MSEZ officers to provide stored water to meet the water demand of the city. He insisted MCC officials to initiate action against people using illegal boosters to suck the water with force in apartments and buildings.

The DC further passed an order that people cannot drill borewell in private properties in the entire district till May 31, except to provide drinking water for the public.

Speaking on the occasion, district in-charge minister, Rai said, "Give first preference to drinking water for people in city. Officers should work with responsibility and respond to drinking water problem of the people. The MCC officers should not go on leave till problem is solved. ZP CEO should take strict action against PDOs who are absent for the meeting, after seeking the reason for their absence."

State health minister U T Khader said that state government has provided sufficient funds to solve the drinking water problem.

MLA J R Lobo, MLC Ivan D'Souza, ZP CEO Srividya, MUDA chairman Ibrahim Kodijal, ZP president Meenakshi Shanthigodu and vice-president Kasturi Panja were present.

Instead of issuing autocratic statements, Rai and others must contemplate on urgent desilting, cleaning, sanitizing, and preparing the water reservoirs to catch maximum water before the onslaught of monsoons so that we will have secured water supply year round, even in drought conditions.

Another issue is also building dams across all coastal salt water rivers to achieve the same objective.

All are starving for water in Mangalore, Major industries are stopped their production in mangalore but it is observed the branded vehicle showrooms and service centers are running their business of servicing and washing of Manglorians vehicle by using precious water only , Why Officials are not checking this ? Why cant they use hard water instead of City corporation treated water at least from December month onward, Why corporation is giving them treated water for such applications, Somebody has to think about this. Hope we can save water at our dams if we think about such activities.

I replied back earlier also, authorities doesn't have any authority to take over the private wells. Where were these people when the warning was issued some time back. what's the hell precaution they have taken. where were Mr. Rai or Khader for all these days... it's not that a fine day it became hot and summer. It's expected and everybody knew. Other than giving the statements like corporation is ready for summer and water problem. What they have done... how many surveys were done on the available water sources... were the companies were given an alert on the water consumption. Now after all the water burned and dried up we are asking them to stop water consumption. If the step was taken few days earlier we could have not reached this situation. Now just showing that they are fully working to support the public. all bull shit. as many of them called out above... once it rains all these ministers, authorities keep these measures under the carpet and back to normal life. Every year we face this situation and every year same drama.... fed up.

Once this critical/severe situation come to normal may be after 1 month we all forget and again back to square one allowing our mineral filled water flow to Arabian sea without taking any action to tackle the problem, we will wake up again when there is severe drought next year nobody to blame for this crisis, our neighbours happily buried their wells and now seeking water from our well which God has provide plenty of water

When the water levels reached a critical level a few weeks ago, the engineer at Thumbe dam alerted the administration at Mangalore. The three wise men at the administration ignored the warning and did nothing about it. Water tanker owners minted money. Now stretch your imagination. Why did the three wise men of the administration not take timely action? Then one wise man got a brilliant idea, impound all available water and sell it for a fee! No problem if MRPL AMR and Disha shut down. No problem if farmers cannot draw water. There are no protests, the activists who use to take candle lit marches have disappeared, just like the water. It seems God forgot to put a voice box when he created a Manglorean.Instead of conserving and saving water if administration uses it like a credit card we face a bleak future. Now don’t blame God for the water shortage and pray to Him in the same breath!!

for the future and also monitor water supply, two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening as there is lots of water wasted by dont care users. This system of water supply is practiced in Mumbai in all the seasons

Earlier we had tar roads with mud on both sides, any rain water used to get absorbed by the ground. Now a days we have concrete road with interlock on both sides, now where will water seep to the ground.
earlier our gutters were mud gutters, now even the gutters are made of concrete , where will water seep to the ground,
earlier our ONIGALU had no interlocks, now all ONIS AND LANES are either interlocked or concretised , where will water seep under ground,
any small piece of land or ground in our BACKYARD, reasoning dust and mud we put interlocks, where will water seep underground
we have to really act now
but what to do, pee bannaga bittil naduna paristiti aand
now is the time, let mcc/panchayaths make rain water harvesting mandatory in all new constructions as per sq ft of construction.
all renovations also should be permitted with rain water harvesting
if we look at the streets in the heart of city , we find concrete roads, interlocks and concrete gutters, no where inside the city rain water will seep to the ground
    time to act now
    now or never

In Mangalore there are many old ( demolished ) tile factories with huge sweet water wells. The MCC could tap this source for the citizens of Mangalore with the owners permission, at least temporarily. In Kadri Kambla area the water source ( tanker water users ) has dried up.

Very bad water management by our Administration / local MLA's and Corporators. Each one blames the other. In the melee the Citizens suffer. In mangalore there are plenty of old wells which are rendered useless due to the seepage of sewage. Several complaints to the MCC has fallen on deaf ears and nobody bothers to come / inspect and solve the problem. They only say we will issue a notice. After that the file collects dust or the official is paid off by the neighbour who is polluting the well with his leach pit. Balmatta and Vas Lane are most hit with this.

I put this remark before also. Please let the rain water flow to the unused bore wells / wells in our area(with proper filter) instead of flowing to the gutter. So some level of ground water may increase for next year.

Coastal Karnataka gets one of the heaviest rain fall in the entire Indian sub-continent. If proper planning and timely execution of dam projects were done, there was no scope of water shortage during this time of the year. Sure, rainfall during last couple of years might have been less than normal, but even a few feet of height increase to the existing dams or building one more dam another 20 km away from Mangalore over Netravati or its tributaries, would have resulted in sufficient storage of water till the end of the summer. It probably requires 2%-3% of the total amount of money the government will be spending on Yettinahole project to solve Mangalore's water shortage.

Corporators will become wealthy with Water Tanker kickback.
I like to ask the officials who measures the water delivered. I saw a Tanker dumping water to a family tank and took rest of the water back. But He charged the family full amount of Rs 1200. I ask the Public to check the water tanker to monitor if He has delivered the full tanker water. I think water meter should be installed on Tanker immediately. This is a day time robbery in the name of Drinking Water.

Would like to comment about the drought in mangalore.

Are the vented dams your grand ma's place which you visit once a year? Why weren't the estimate created well in advance? Aren't there anyone who is responsible for not alerting?

Is there anyone in city who is really worried? Or are you not doing/ wasting water because you are not getting it now? Are we using it wisely? I don't think so. Most of our work halted because of less/no water not because we use less and want to save for the others in the city

I see kiddish report in news paper saying we are doing this we are doing that. I think this is clearly a way to mint money saying mangalore is drought effected.

Past is past. Lets ignore for now? Do you know Mangalore and DK receives good rainfall and most of us don't have any way to capture/store rain water. Basically rainwater drains or harvesters except the ones which was privately done because they are interested. Why govt did not do this till now? Are we seeing business(water) in this drought.
