Mangalore, Oct 23: Martyred and meritorious policemen of the Dakshina Kannada district were honoured on the occasion of the ‘Police Commemoration Day’, at the District Armed Reserve police ground here on Sunday, Oct 21. This day is observed with solemnity by the DK district police.

The said commemoration day is organized since 1959, in memory of a small contingent of police personnel who were attacked by Chinese troops, killing all the ten police personnel. Since the fateful day they became martyrs, the day is being observed in their memory.

Deputy commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao was the chief guest on the occasion. Senior police officials including the Inspector-General of Police (IGP-Western range) Ashit Mohan Prasad, laid wreaths at the memorial.

Breaking earlier set procedure and protocol, at the explicit request of the chief guest himself, the police department did away with the speech by the chief guest himself, scheduled as part of the function. This aspect is significant as the department follows a very tight protocol for this function. The police personnel are well-trained to prepare the agenda right from the time the guest congregate at the venue, to when the guests as well as the dignitaries depart.

The names of 719 police personnel which included 11 from the State, who laid down their lives between October 1, 2006 and September 30, 2007 was read out by the superintendent of police N. Sathish Kumar.
