Impact of drought on economy pegged at Rs 6,50,000 crore

New Delhi, May 11 (PTI) : Drought in 10 states is estimated to impact the economy by at least Rs 6,50,000 crore as about 33 crore people across 256 districts are facing the grave situation, a study has revealed.

Due to two consecutive years of poor monsoon, water shortage in reservoirs as well as lowering of ground water table has created a serious challenge for the drought-affected areas in 10 states like Maharashtra and Karnataka, the study by Assocham said.

"The rough estimate indicates that this drought will cost national economy at least Rs 6,50,000 crore or say USD 100 billion," it said.

The impact of drought is likely to remain for at least six months more because one needs resources and time to revive the activities on ground even if monsoon is predicted to be normal this year, it said.

"Let us assume, the government will spend just Rs 3,000 per person to cover water, food, health for these people for one or two month. With the population of 33 crore at risk, the estimated cost to economy will be about Rs 1,00,000 crore per month," the study said.

The loss of subsidies on power, fertiliser and other inputs multiply the impact, it added.

On economic impact of drought, the study said the financial resources get diverted from development to aid and the possible migration to other places puts pressure on urban infrastructure and supplies.

There is likely an impact on children and women health besides farm debt increase due to loss in livestock and farm economy in the drought-hit districts, it said.

The drought would create inflationary pressures making the food management an imperative challenge for the government and the policy makers, he added.

Every year we hear the same,
if rain delayed, we call it drought if there is heavy rain we call it flood. These figures doesn't help suffering people, they dont even understand how many zero's been added in front of the figure. Practically take actions, then talk if you do nothing, then do not publish figures to take an u-turn on GDP growth. We have capacity, resources, tax payers money, why not work in preserving water even for one year drought.

India is heavily paying for the cumulative effect (karma) of mismanagement of nature and its natural resources, ever since independence.

Hope we have learnt our lessons well, and try to undo the damage to our environment and ecology, before it's too late.

khoinoor diamond or any diamond for large size has no value money wise. You can have the biggest diamond in the world, but if you dont have a buyer its pretty much useless.

khoinoor diamond is estimated to worth as much as 1 billion $, But who would really buy it?

May be these types of calamities and disasters impact very badly on BJP government and the plans towards economic developments, which indirectly indicates negative performance in the chart. Things are not in favor of BJP government. For the voters in next elections that is enough to dump BJP

The solid mother cow lover CM of Maharastra is faced with the worst draught in the nation so appealed to Mr. Modi for crores of Rs aid.
Mr. Modi was very gracious to offer Rs. 4000 crore assuring him that he will file a loan application with the World Bank.

Now Rs. 6,50,000 crore, it seems like Mr. Modi has to fly every week to the World Bank to collect the loan through ping all the political rallies in India throwing cow dung and trash at the non-BJP Governments all across India.

Mr. Modi didn't remember that his Railway Minister was in Cochin last year appealing to the Somalian citizens of India to invest billions of dollars in the Railway. Indeed, every day aachi dins are pouring on the BJP Government. The FDI by the trillions of dollars to transform India into China can be waited a few more years. Let the BJP Government solve the drought problem.

Still will not affect the MPsministers, Industrialist like Ambani, Adani and Vijay Malya.... They will take Further Loans to evade income tax and for other purpose and will live a luxurious lives in ACs. Only the common man is bound to suffer.

First reduce the salaries and incentives these people get and recover all the loan these people own, and then see the difference.

It's a natural calamity and hardships and pain on the part of people from drought effected areas.
Also, greater challenge on the part of Central/State governments to provide help and bring solutions to effected people. We humans can only boast but cannot control nature’s fury. All must pray to God to help by sending showers without delay. Let us join in prayers and in their grief. Merciful God have mercy on your creations.
Global warming and unpredictable weather pattern is bringing havoc on humans. What could be the coming days only God knows?
    Please keep politics away.
