Pejawar Swamiji opposes allottment of land to MRPL for expansion plans

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, May 12: Sri Vishveshateertha Swamiji, head of Paryaya Pejawar Math, has urged the state government not to give its nod for the acquisition of 3,000 acres of land spread over Permude and Kuttettur villages in Mangaluru taluk to facilitate fourth phase expansion of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL).

He was addressing a press conference organized at Srikrishna Math after holding talks with a delegation of activists fighting against the special economic zone, on Wednesday May 11.

"Two years back, residents of these villages supported by us had fought against sanctioning land for the expansion of the said project. As a result, the government led by Yeddyurappa had denotified these lands. Efforts to acquire these lands have begun once again. Already the twin-districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada have been suffering from problems like drinking water shortage and environment pollution. Therefore, expansion of the industries is not in the interests of these districts," he asserted.

The Swamiji recollected that large tracts of land earlier acquired for this project has been left unused. This unused land can be used for expansion plans, and no new land acquisition should take place, he reiterated. He also called upon all the legislators and MPs from the region to steadfastly extend support to the villagers on this issue.

Environmentalist, Vidya Dinkar, speaking on the occasion, pointed out that land allotted for the first, second and third phase of MRPL expansion project has not been fully utilized. She said that the deputy commissioner of the district too does not have any information on this issue. She resented efforts being made by the government to begin land acquisition process afresh through Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board.

Govindadas and Natesh of Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Samiti were present.

Better cause would be fighting for providing jobs to Mangloreans and Kannada speaking guys than giving jobs to other state people. If I am wrong Iam sorry but we need industries in Mangalore so that youths will work in our city than going to Bangalore or Gulf for peanut salary.

I totally agree. We need employment for our people in the undivided district. There are many unemployment youths moving to Bengaluru for jobs. We must get jobs in MRPL. There must be a clause that 75% of the jobs in MRPL should be from Coastal Karnataka or from other districts of Karanataka. Kannadigas should be given preference, Our so called Politicians and Religious people talk one thing and do the other thing. We must be united in these matters.

I completely agree there are many jobless youths who need to go to Bangalore and other cities for employment. But it very important to note the environmental impact and threat that pose to humanity on a whole.
    1. The fertile land which can be used for agricultural purpose are utilized by industries. Every year the population of India increases by few percent but the agricultural land is shrinking. Finally this will lead to more demand of food but less produce resulting in price hike as we need to import it from foreign countries.
    2. Forest which are important source of fresh air are destroyed and instead it is replaced by industries which give out lot of poisonous gases. This results in Air Pollution, Acid Rains and poisoning of water bodies.
    3. As industries expand, people from different places in state come and concentrate at one place for Job, this results in over usage of Natural resources. This results in water shortage
    4. The vehicular traffic will rise resulting in high traffic and vehicular air pollution
    5. Climatic changes due to less trees resulting in unbearable heat throughout the year
Industrialization seems to be a big boon to humanity but it has its own disadvantage. We should not allow Mangalore to saturate else Day is not far that it can be a Dead City after repeated exploitation of nature.

Mangaluru is already over-industrialized, polluted and over populated. Ground water is polluted. Air is polluted with carbon fumes coming from MRPL and HPCL. Land mafia is working full time to milk those who want to set up business.

First of all it is surprising how a crude oil refinery like MRPL gets to operate within residential area. Secondly, despite the pollution, company like HPCL gets permission to operate adding to the problem. Both companies are letting out thick fumes at night and chemicals into the sea. It is high time, people become aware of this development and come together to oppose industrialization. I fully support Swamiji's initiative to oppose industrialization and call upon many more people of influence to do the same.

Already we are getting bad smell of hydrocarbon in Bajpe which is harmful to human being. Wells in areas near to the plant are getting polluted. Lot of agricultural land and trees are destroyed. Again why MRPL wants expansion? People need to support Vidya Dinakar and swamiji.

The impact of industrialization and urbanization has caused damage to nature which has resulted in decreased rain fall, more heat in the environment epidemic for deadly diseases like cancer and many diseases due to mans acts against nature.
Hence before enforcement for more land acquisition its is the duty of the government to review the matter again whether its is safe or not to expand the MRPL unit further for the benefit of future.
