Dairy farmers ask police in twin districts to stop cattle thefts

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 14: Chairman of Dakshina Kannada Milk Union, Raviraj Hegde, has urged the superintendents of police of both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts to take steps to minimize incidents of theft of cows. He pointed out that there has been widespread theft of cows all over coastal Karnataka.

"Farmers from the twin-district have adopted dairying as a primary activity along with agriculture. They have bought costly cows of high yielding variety, by raising loans either from banks or other sources, and selling the milk to milk societies. However, there has been disturbing increase in the cases of theft of cows from the cattle sheds and also from spots where they are left for grazing. There have also been cases in which the thieves threatened the dairy farmers or posed life threats, and forcibly took away their cows. Although complaints about these incidents were filed in the local police stations, none of the owners of these cows have got any clue about where their cattle have gone," he pointed out.

He stated that because of such incidents, dairy farmers have been losing interest in dairying activity. Therefore, he has urged the superintendents of police to evince interest in these cases, and pass on directions to police stations where these complaints have been filed, to take suitable steps against those involved with stealing of cows and such other crimes, and to see that the theft of cows comes to a standstill here.

Some of the distressed dairy farmers due to these activities are, Benny D'Souza from Pudu society, Kalyani, member of Naringana society, Deena Elcy Saldanha of Neermarga society, Vimala from Kallamundkoor, Lilly Monteiro from Panja, Mookkoor Ganesh Shetty, Sanjeeva Gowda Idkidu, Sanjeevi Shetty from Bandsale in Udupi cistrict, and Bharati from Bidkalkatte near Kundapur.

Its obvious who are the cattle thieves. It is very evident and history has proved that thieves have solid backing by one of the 'Sachivas' and even if arrested are out in a matter of day or 2. So they are immune.

The reason for the cattle theft is the government . both congress and bjp who play the blame game and voters and farmers are losers.

If there was a cattle market/ official slaughter house in mangalore and udupi where old cattle could be sold this problem would not rise, like they have in bangalore.

In bangalore you GoMathas roaming the streets and nobody robs.

In the end it is the people who these elect these parties to be blamed.

No use of labeling mangalore with intelligent people who do not come out of their comfort zone.

Let there be no milk for a month then some steps may be taken.

Tom Cat: I agree with you. When people intercept cattle that are on the way to a government authorized slaughter house ,thieves will have a field day robbing grazing cattle and illegally selling their meat.

I saw in European countries they take care of their cattle or animals. No one take away their cattle. If anyone takes his dog or cat out and if it makes dirty of public places they have to clean it, but people thinks India is a public toilet and animal roam or make dirty any place. Our ladies wear gold and people leave their animals and ask police to take care of thefts?????

To put an end to this menace once and for all, arrest the cattle thieves and pack them off to a severely drought-affected place like Marathwada or Bundelkhand, where they should be made to dig wells, canals, plough the fields etc., under strict security of ferocious dogs or armed security personnel, with minimum requirement of food packets to be thrown at them, for their survival. This type of punishment should be continued for a minimum period of 5 years, so as to be really effective, and for deterring prospective cattle thieves from joining this profession.

Since cattle thefts have have a very bad effect on the rural economy and communal harmony in the twin districts, "No Trial, No Jail, No Bail policy" would be the only deterrent, in this present situation of lawlessness. No other treatment seems to be effective.

    People,

During 'Land Reforms' days...70's and 80's then CM late Devraj Urs appointed land reforms Police in all Police Stations to deal with land reform cases exclusively...

Now need of the hour in all Police Stations of Karnataka,,, we must have 'Cow Police' to protect Cows...

If Police is unable or unwilling to do this task...this duty may be handed over to 'Moral Police'...
