Eloped girl attends father's funeral amid security, abuse by kin

Bengaluru, May 17 (DHNS): A 22-year-old girl, whose elopement and subsequent marriage with a man of her choice drove her parents to suicide, attended her father’s funeral amid police security and a volley of abuses from her relatives on Monday.

Rashmi M, an engineering student from Shivapura, Peenya, turned up for the last rites of her father, Manichandra, at the Chamarajpet crematorium after her relatives issued an appeal through the media. She had skipped her mother’s funeral, fearing a violent backlash from her relatives. Her family kept Manichandra’s mortal remains in the house till 10 am on Monday, hoping she will turn up but she didn’t. Then they took the body to the crematorium.

Rashmi arrived at the crematorium under police cover that she had asked for. The relatives could not bear the sight of her and hurled abuses at her. They even tried to prevent her from paying her last respects. Unable to control her emotions seeing her father’s mortal remains, she collapsed at his feet and wept inconsolably.

Rashmi was dating Sridhar Gowda, a native of Mandya who became her family’s tenant, for the last 9 months. When her parents learnt about the affair, they vehemently opposed it on the grounds that Gowda belonged to a different caste.

On May 13, her birthday, Rashmi asked her parents for permission to go to a mall. They let her go. Sometime later, Gowda called Rashmi’s father and told him they had married.
Manichandra and Sujatha got so distraught at getting the news that they went to a railway track in Gollarahalli near Doddabelavangala on Saturday and ingested poison.
Alarmed passersby took them to hospital. Sujatha died on Saturday and Manichandra on Sunday.

After attending her father’s funeral, Rashmi, along with Gowda, appeared before the Bengaluru North taluk tahsildar at Kandaya Bhavan. Sridhar claimed that Rashmi’s mother supported their marriage. He also claimed ignorance about why Rashmi’s parents committed suicide.

The Doddabelavangala police, who had booked Gowda for abetment of suicide, arrested him. A court in Doddaballapur remanded him in judicial custody.

It is a Tragedy. The parents have taken too seriously of their daughter's marriage to outsider. We are in 2lst century, not 50 years ago. We have to look into the future. Police arrest of Son-In Law is unprofessional job. Things could have changed if the matter was handled with care and love.

who ever is talking about cast and religion please understand that there was no cast made by God. Its we who made it.
Last year my dad was hospitalized and needed around 15 bottles of blood which was very difficult for us to search within our cast or religion.I'm sure at that point of time people never go see the cast of the person giving blood.when people are ready to take other cast blood to save someones life then why in all other cases people talk about religion and cast.
And Do not Blame the girl here she is 22 years old and as per the law has all the right to choose her partner. Parents are also human and cant be right all the time.

With time the caste and religion will disappear from the society. This is the beginning and for sure there will be some incidences as reported here.
The mindset should be changed first, that of the educated one's. It is surprising to see some comments here blaming the eloped girl. 'Na ghar ka, na ghat ka' comment by Lydia Lobo, shows, however educated he might be, he can not think free unless he frees himself from the clutches of religion.
The percentage of inter-cast and inter-religion marriages is increasing rapidly. It is time for us to accept and go forward.

without consent and blessings of parents most of the marriages found failed. everybody is having there own right to decide about there future still needs opinion from there guardians. don't ever try to make parents as a villain. always they are wishing good of there childrens. if everybody become stubborn like this gal, today all had inter-caste/religion marriages. atleast think of your childrens who bear mostly in latter stage. It shows how much parents loved there gal from childhood. This gal shattered there dreams for her own selfiness.

Parents are humans not God. At times parents are greedy too. We have seen honor killing , do they care about their own blood? social status is more imp , when their son or daughter eloped with lower caste .

The people who hurled abuses to her should have been arrested. These are the people who must have taunted the parents for her daughter marrying someone from other caste. When close relatives make the parents feel guilty of letting their daughter elope and marry a person from another caste, the parents could not have the faced the "shame". The boy should not have called the girl's father and informed about their marriage. He should have waited till the situation was normal. I am sure the parents must have felt terribly humiliated and insulted. Educated couple could have handled the situation in a better manner.

    sad story..
Yes, almost all religions have denominations in some form or the rather. it has a name caste among hindus. others call in in different words.. yes, putting barrier on bonding/marriage between denomination is really cruel whichever religion it is.

More importantly, what is the responsibility of children vis-a-vis their parents???

At what age/point a parent should give up on their children??

    Attachment is the problem.

As all religions say, nothing is permanent in this world, do not attach unduly to anything in this world.
