Mangaluru, May 27: The citizens from the city and surrounding areas heaved a sigh of relief after several weeks, as the water supply position improved drastically after catchment areas of River Netravati experienced rains recently. However, the deputy commissioner's decision to lift the ban placed on industries earlier from lifting water from River Netravati has come as a bolt from the blue.

It is gathered that industries taking advantage of the above order, have begun to draw water from the river since Thursday afternoon, causing noticeable dip in the flow of water in the river near Thumbay dam. It is said that city corporation here is not happy about this decision and some behind-the-scene developments are taking place. City mayor, Harinath, noted that the above decision was taken without consulting people's representatives. Saying that water flow in the river has been adversely affected after MRPL began drawing water from the river, he said he will direct people if they approach him with water woes henceforth to the district administration.

The deputy commissioner said that as the head of the district, he is vested with the responsibility of looking after the interests of industries too. He noted that non-working industries adversely affect the people.

While the city corporation officials say that the current position might not permit continuance of water supply till June 5, when monsoon is expected to begin, the district administration is of the opinion that water position is comfortable for the present and there is no need for worry.
