Serving Catholic Bishop to donate kidney to Hindu man

Kottayam, May 27 (PTI) : In a noble gesture, a Catholic Bishop in Kerala has decided to donate one of his kidneys to save the life of a 30-year-old Hindu man, who is suffering from the organ failure.

Auxiliary Bishop of Pala Diocese Jacob Murickan today appeared before an authorisation committee of Kottayam Government Medical College to complete all legal formalities with regard to donating one of his kidneys to E Sooraj.

"This is perhaps for the first time in the history, a serving Bishop is donating one of his kidneys to save a valuable life," said Kidney Federation Chairman Father Davis Chiramal.

Chiramal, who had earlier donated his kidney to an ailing person in Kerala, said the organ transplantation surgery will be performed at Lakeshore Hospital, Ernakulam, on June 1.

"Sooraj belongs to a very poor family. He is the sole bread winner of his family comprising his mother and wife", Chiramal said.

He had lost his father four years ago. Later, his brother died of heart attack.

"Hearing his sad stories, the Bishop decided to donate one of his kidneys to the Hindu youth. We also want to generate money from generous people for successfully completing the organ transplantation surgery," the priest said.

Muricken was declared Auxiliary Bishop of Palai in 2012 while serving as the Diocesan Pastoral Coordinator.

On 19 September 2013, he, along with the other newly-appointed Bishops from around the world, was received in audience by Pope Francis at the Vatican.

This is the 4th case I know on which catholic priests donated their kidneys to the needy. It is the clear picture of their humanity and example of their journey on Jesus Christ's path. This is the story of Kerala
WHY THIS PRACTICE NOT TO BE SEEN AMONG CHRISTIANS AT OTHER PART OF INDIA ? MOST OF THE PRIESTS AND NUNS ARE FROM DAKSHINA KANNADA SERVING ACROSS INDIA.
    A real matter to think.

It's a very good move. But one thing I don't understand why our media is always interested in giving religion color to these incidents. Humanity is first then others are next, whether it's Hindu, Muslim or X'tian.

It is because, dear Dr., our society is, unfortunately, divided on communal lines. People are sharpening their knives to kill the followers of other community, just to gain power. They spread hatred amongst the people. Noble people like the honorable Bishop are very rare to find these days. We salute him for his noble deed that too to a poor person of a different community. I am sure, Communal minded people will try to find fault in this noble gesture as well, saying that the Bishop is trying to convert a Hindu! They should be ashamed of their mean mentality and try to emulate this great Bishop.

Would have been happier to read the news Religious man donates kidney to needy rather than Christian priest donates kidney to Hindu. Students studying in convent schools dont view their teachers as Christian teachers but rather just teachers. Media and politicians alije divide divide and further divide. If tomorrow people start viewing politicians as Hindu prime minister Muslim president Christian speaker God save this country...

Hegde, who told you that in Christian schools there are only Christian teachers, first go and refresh your mind, in Christian schools majority of the teachers are of other faith than Christian, First know what you are commenting.

The point raised is why mention the religion of the persons in question at all in this or any news what so ever. Do you love reading news like "Two injured when Muslim mans car hit Hindu mans car". " Three Christian children, a Hindu child and a Muslim child sustained injuries when the school roof came down at govt school" or further " Hindu Kannadiga chief minister directs Christian Malayali Home minister to conduct road inspection" ...Wake up!!!!

How bad or evil the world may be, it is up to each one to our bit to undo it. Time and again we see that in this world. Certain individuals irrespective of religion, caste or creed are born in this world to open our eyes. Bishop Jacob has done this and his wonderful act has touched all who read this article. Thank you Bishop Jacob for awakening our conscious with your noble act.

Bishop is truly following our Lord Jesus Christ.
Lord Jesus final message, "Love one another as I have loved you. Through which all will know that you belong to me"
God the Father's inherent nature is Love. God is Love.
Man sinned, God was hurt but his love for humanity didn't evaporate.
    Hats off to this Bishop.
He glorified God through his works.

This is a true example of "Love one another, as I have loved you". This operation is a major one, for both. In Mumbai, I know a woman who gave her kidney to her brother, but unfortunately due to some problem, both died. Since, the danger is there for the donor also, to donate knowingly the risk, this Bishop is showing to the world what love is really meant.

    Whatsoever you do
to the least of my people,
    that you do unto me.

    1. When I was hungry, you gave me to eat
When I was thirsty, you gave me to drink.
Now enter into the home of my Father.

    2. When I was homeless, you opened your door
When I was naked, you gave me your coat.
Now enter into the home of my Father.

    3. When I was weary, you helped me find rest
When I was anxious, you calmed all my fears.
Now enter into the home of my Father.

    4. When in a prison, you came to my cell
When on a sickbed, you cared for my needs.
Now enter into the home of my Father.

    5. When I was laughed at, you stood by my side
When I was happy, you shared in my joy.
Now enter into the home of my Father.
By accepting Lord commandments Dear Rev. you are gained the position in heavenly kingdom. God bless you and keep you safe. Amen.

Donating a kidney while one is healthy is a noble gesture. Giving to a person of another religion, shows that we are first human beings and everyone deserves to be taken care of, if we can, irrespective of what they believe in. We pray that the Bishop may live a healthy life in the years to come.
