Mangaluru, May 30: The newly built staff quarters of Customs Commissionerate, Mangaluru, at Datta Nagar, Bikarnakatte was inaugurated by member of Central Board of Excise and Customs, Vanaja N Sarna (Administration) on Monday May 30.

Speaking on the occasion, she appealed the staff of customs to make the most of the staff quarters and contribute to environment by planting saplings.

“We often give importance to offices and buildings and forget the people who reside in the house. If we are posted to a distant place from our home town and if the place of stay is good then we become more efficient in whatever we do. Whenever we go for a residence, we give our best efforts to bring it up. But we do not repeat the same during its usage. We must also keep the surroundings clean along with planting saplings so that we contribute in preserving environment,” she said.

Speaking on the occasion, Customs Chief Commissioner, Bengaluru Zone, Rajiv Bhushan Tiwari said, “Proposals have been sent by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to the state government requesting for the allocation of lands in Mysuru, Mandya and Madikeri, where the customs department plans to build staff quarters and offices.”

“There are four lands belonging to Customs department in Dakshina Kannada, seven in Udupi and 45 in Uttara Kannada. Hence identification of the land records is being given due importance,” he said.

“In the upcoming project, the department will develop the Old Customs House, which has a history of 100 years. Demarcation of land will be done and boundary walls will be built around the complex, within three months,” he added.

CPWD, Bengaluru Chief Engineer RK Soni said that there are 72 residences in the new staff quarters and each is built at a cost of Rs 18 lac approximately.

Central Excise and Service Tax, Mangaluru, Commissioner Dr M Subramanyam welcomed the gathering. Pravin Vinod deputy commissioner proposed vote of thanks. Shobha Peres Bhat compered the programme.
