Haveri, Jun 1: Seven women lost their lives in an accident which occurred at Hirenandihalli Cross near Shidenur in Byadgi taluk in the district on the evening of Tuesday May 31. Six among them died on the spot while the others breathed her last at the hospital.

The accident occurred when a Tumtum vehicle in which they were travelling went out of the control of its driver and hit a roadside tree. The deceased were Girijavva Shivappa Guled (50), Savita Laxmappa Barki (26), Savitri Savikere (25), Fatimavva Moodleppa Kannammavanavar (45), Gangavva Hanumantappa Doddaneelappanavar (52), Renuka Fakkirappa Kajjari (26), and Beebijan Malladad (45). Three persons who suffered serious injuries were provided first aid at Byadagi community health centre before being taken to Davanagere for advanced treatment.

All the deceased were workers who routinely came to the chilly market at Byadgi for cleaning of chilly. Hundreds of people including relatives of the deceased rushed to the spot after the news of the accident spread. It is said that the vehicle which was moving slowly on Byadgi-Hamsavabavi road which is hilly, picked up speed at the slope which followed, after which the accident occurred. The fact that the vehicle was new and its driver was inexperienced also would have contributed to the accident.

Angry villagers stopped four tippers which came at high speed on the road and broke their glasses. The policemen succeeded in pacifying the villagers.
