Mangaluru, Jun 1: A mentally unstable woman of Soorinje who has been under house arrest for the last four years is likely to be pushed back onto the streets due to official apathy.

Mangaluru taluk Soorinje grama Puchadi resident, Mallika, aged 40, a mentally unstable destitute had been under house arrest in a room for the last four years without food, proper clothing and care. Her alcoholic younger brother was also with her.

Locals who saw her plight informed the department of women and child welfare and admitted her at the Wenlock hospital under grama panchayat assistance. The department and grama panchayat development officials assured the locals and the woman's brother that they will take complete care of the woman thereafter. They also said that they will admit her at the government orphanage once cured.

Grama panchayat member Dinakar Kulal lamented that the assurances were all forgotten about after the woman was admitted at the hospital and none of them visited her there.

Locals and Dinakar Kulal have been helping the woman inquiring about her health from time to time. As there is improvement in her health, the doctors have asked for her to be taken home.

However the villagers alleged that the women and child welfare department officials said that it was not their responsibility. Mallika is like an orphan at the hospital. Locals have urged the officials for suitable arrangements to be made for her.
