Bengaluru, Jun 2: Noted Kannada film director T S Nagabharana has been asked by the state government to produce a film on former Karnataka chief minister late D Devaraj Urs to mark his birth centenary.

Urs, who was instrumental in implementing the most progressive Land Reforms Act and was hailed as the champion of backward classes, ruled the state as chief minister during 1972–77 and 1978–80. The state government has decided to produce a film on the life and achievements of Urs.

The film would be based on several innovative social and economic policies introduced by Urs for the upliftment of the other backward classes and the poor.

Karnataka’s social welfare minister H Anjaneya said the film will be released this year and will be directed by well-known Kannada film director T S Nagabharana.

The estimated cost of the film is Rs 3 crore, the minister said.

Nagabharana would take decisions on script, dialogue, songs, actors etc to depict the true life and achievements of Urs, the minister said.

The film has several characters to inform the public about the factors that triggered Urs to implement land reforms in the 1970s and establishment of backward class department for the welfare of the other backward class people.

The film will be released across the state at cinemas and will be a fitting tribute to the champion of the poor and backward classes besides farmers, he said.
