Woman accuses police of unbecoming behaviour, Udupi SP clarifies

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 3: A woman from Kody Kanyana near Udupi has accused the sub-inspector and police constable of Brahmavar police station of deriding her and behaving with her unreasonably.

Addressing a press conference in the city on Thursday June 2 during her visit here for handing over a memorandum to western range inspector general of police, Arun Chakravarthy, she said that a gang had  attacked her brother backed by pre-existing enmity on Brahmavar connecting road, and that having suffered serious injuries, he was hospitalized.

"The police sub-inspector and police constable who visited the spot, urged us to agree for a compromise. When we did not concur, they attacked my brother. When I questioned this behaviour, they behaved with me rudely and threatened me," she explained.

The woman claimed that when she met the district superintendent of police seeking justice, he too sided with his subordinates and threatened to file case against her. "I brought this matter to the attention of Human Rights Universal Foundation after which the superintendent of police was apprised of all the aspects of the case, but he remained unconvinced. Therefore, I met the inspector general of police on Thursday and handed over a petition. He has promised to undertake investigation," she stated.

President of Udupi district women's wing of Human Rights Universal Foundation, Jayashree Bhat, and secretary of the organization's Dakshina Kannada unit, Sajini Vijaya, said that they would carry on fight till the affected woman gets justice.

President of the organization, Prashanth P R, was present.

Superintendent of police Annamalai clarifies

Daijiworld Media Network- Udupi (RJP)

Udupi, Jun 3: Superintendent of police (SP) of Udupi district Annamalai has issued a press statement on the allegation of the woman from Kody Kanyana. The statement issued on June 2, says "On May 25, the woman sent me message saying she and her brother were abused by unknown persons by phone. I sent her message back saying that she could go to Brahmavar police station. When the woman sent me a message that she feared to go to Brahmavar police station, I sent her a message saying that she could meet the inspector there. Then I received a message that she went to Kota police station where her case was registered.

“Brahmavar Inspector has submitted a report to me through Udupi DySP regarding the case. I have already sent a notice to the sub- inspector and head constable as to why they could not behave properly with the woman. The woman came to my office on May 27 with representatives of human rights and said that we should register a case of rape against the police official. As prima facie it does not look like a case of rape, I have told her that it was not possible to so. Yet she has the right to lodge a complaint regarding the same, I explained to her,” the statement continues.

“As superintendent of police, it is my job to maintain law and order in the district. At the same time I have the duty to protect the police personnel who are discharging their duties. I want to state here that no discrimination or favouritism was done in this case. There was no rape as alleged. But as per the misbehaviour is concerned, notice has been sent. As the press meet was held in Mangaluru instead of Udupi, I issue this press statement so that people from Mangaluru know about the incident." the statement ends.
