Mangaluru Jun 3: Torrential rain which lashed the city on Thursday June 2 night created lot of problems for the people. As the drains near Rao and Rao Circle located in the vicinity of State Bank in the city remain choked, rainwater directly flooded the roads in the area. Rainwater also entered shops inside the old fish market located in front of the circle.

On Friday morning, people who routinely conduct their business here were seen cursing the city corporation for its negligence that has created a crisis-like situation for them..

The work of constructing a new drain had begun about one and half month back at Rao and Rao Circle. The road was dug to a depth of six feet, and the mud so extracted was heaped by the roadside. The heaps of mud were creating lot of problems for the people, who as usual fell silent after cursing the city corporation. The city corporation turned a deaf ear to all these criticisms. Not only that, they also suspended work on lhe drain halfway through its execution.

Due to heavy rain, the mud which was heaped by the roadside has flown back into the drain with rainwater and blocked it. This has forced rainwater to directly flow on the road and enter buildings located by the roadsides.

People conducting business in the area handed over a petition to the commissioner and officials at the city corporation on Friday, explaining to them the problems faced because of haphazard working stated above. These businessmen have noted that lack of people-friendly approach on the part of the city corporation has resulted in chaos. They have warned of holding protest in front of the city corporation office if the officials fail to wake up to the problem and take up and complete the pending work without further delay.

ALL OF THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE OF NO CONSEQUENCE( NON ACCOUNTABILITY). I can understand if this happens in Saudi Arabia where this rain would be an exception rather than a rule. The problem will continue - unless there is accountability. As the saying goes - let the buck stop there.

Whenever there is accountability : A person is responsible or it is his responsibility to maintain/ repair , that person is held responsible. IF this does not happen in MCC - MAKE IT HAPPEN. BJP and Congress instead of beating around the bush- work towards accountability and these incidences( rain water mess on road) will be a thing of the past.

Absolutely no sense of commitment to MCC. Everybody is busy filling their pockets. Now where is our DC, Kader Bhai, Nalin, Oscar, Moily all have gone underground or busy in yettinhole project. What a shame with our civil administration & we want to be in smart city programme. They should be joking.

MCC is making bylaws for only building. When such situation arises MCC has no properly technical executing teams to handle disasters. They dont even have shoes, safety dress, helmets for workers. They just wake up and see things as they are.

Every year same problem. Uneducated people are sitting there. See the condition of that area and you can make out the quality of work. Above that they want to make Mangalore a smart city. How?? There should be a debate every year before Monsoon starts or every month regarding the progress and people's complaints. Jai hind.
