Mangaluru, Jun 3: MLC Ivan D' Souza, who is also the member of Karnataka state minority commission, has advised the students belonging to minorities, especially the Christian community to make use of various scholarships of the state government.

Addressing the media persons in his office on Friday, June 3, he urged the students of the community to benefit by government scholarships since the admissions to the professional courses have begun and there are very few takers compared to the population of the Christian community. “Economically backward students who want to pursue professional courses like B Com, B Sc etc can apply for government aid. The government usually reimburses the fees to the students or pays straight to the college,” he said.

“The state government has provided Rs 1,200 crore to the state minority department and Rs 125 crore for Christian Development Parishad. The people of minority community can avail the benefits from these grants by applying for Svavalambana, Shrama Shakti, Arivu, Gangakalyana, Kirusala and home loans before June 30. Monetary help is provided on receipt of applications for renovation of churches and cemetery, destitute care centres, HIV care centres and construction of community halls. The government provides Rs 1 crore if the community hall is to be constructed in urban limits and Rs 50 lac if it is in rural areas,” he added.

"Programmes are scheduled at Belthangady Holy Redeemer church and Kirem church hall on June 5 and June 19 respectively to create awareness about various government schemes. Officials have visited district centres in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Kalaburgi etc under my leadership to train the resource persons. A sum of Rs 1,730 lac has been distributed among 73,335 beneficiaries under various schemes with 100 percent achievement in the 2015-16 financial year.

"An officer has also been outsourced to train the minority department officials. To create awareness about the various schemes, programmes have been organised at Ashoknagar church 9.30 am and Holy Redeemer Church Beltangady at 3 pm on June 5 and at Kirem Church Hall at 8.30 am 19 June.” he concluded.

    Why doesn't Ivan Dsouza publish the Govt. schemes for Christians ? How are we supposed to know or dream of ? If not the simplest way is to hand over a copy to the CSI and Catholic Bishops of Mangalore / Udupi so that it can be published in the Church magazine / monthly bulletin. No point of him sitting on the copy and making press statements. I don't understand why J.R.Lobo is silent on this.

    Af & Lydia, you know better, if the churches take initiative in this matter the same christian people will say the parish priest or church committee members eaten the money. if a christian was given little less and other has given more, they will talk without knowing the cause. I think parishes do not enter into this headache only because of this blame. and if any christian get any benefit in village area then RAMA SENA, BD, vanara sena, will join together and call police sena and investigate whether this christian is forcefully converted from other religion.

    Af., So correct you are at that, especially a caste certificate. God knows what they will do with that, especially when they know a 'Christian' is applying for the scheme whose caste is open declaration upon him/her being baptised into the religion.

    All said and done. The fact is, even though, Christians know about these schemes, Churches are announcing them regularly, still MLC has to beg Christians to take the benefits. You know why, 99% Christians, if they have means, they will not avail these benefits. It's in their nature. Most of them will not take, they just give!

    Christians deserve such help. Most of the times Christians helps others but in this case Christians will get help but such helps benefit Christians and later the same youth will serve the society without any discrimination. That is the mentality of Christian just serve serve serve. How nice to be a Christian.

    @Shankar, Mangalore
    - Government schemes are founded by taking money from all and there is a limit to number of government scholarships
    - There are many more non-Christians than Christians and thus more non-Christians avail government schemes than Christians.
    - The Christians who are able, also help poor Christians, but the number of poor they can help is small. Poverty continually grows for all communities and the middle class is becoming poorer each day.

    If the govt. is offering some sort of aid by way of minority status, what is wrong in availing It?? In one side, we cry for help and when granted, we think, we are on top of the world. Udyavar's newly built church recently, availed a grant of Rs. 25 lacs out of Rs. 50 lacs sanctioned to it for renovation of the church. So what is wrong in availing the educational freeships granted to Christian students? Let us be humble in our approach. After all, government is offering only a peanut out of the vast resources available with it and let us not spoil the good will of the government. Kudos to Ivan who is instrumental in publishing the good intentions of the government and enlightening the minority communities of the state. Well done Sir, Keep the good work going.

    DO NOT DO THESE PARTIALITY DUE TO THESE AS HINDU WE FEEL LIKE WE DO NOT GET ANY SUPPORT. ALL THE SCHEME'S ARE ONLY FOR THE MINORITY.
    SO AREN'T WE INDIAN'S .IF WE ALL ARE INDIAN'S THEN WHY THERE IS A DIFFERENCE.

    Thanks to MLC, Ivan D Souza for bringing up this great news as a reminder for the gain of many.

    Empowerment of minority subjects through professional courses must be one of the objectives Govt. aid, Govt. scholarships. This scheme has the potential to lead to up-liftment of the socio economic conditions of the minority communities lightens up their financial burden on higher education from none !! . This scheme will definitely form the foundation for their educational attainment and provide a level playing field in the competitive employment arena where Minorities are in dearth need.

    This division in the society is because of the selfish motives of some politicians and not of common man.
