Mangaluru, Jun 4: Mangaluru Academy of Refined Studies (MARS) was inaugurated by Dr B M Hegde, former vice chancellor, Manipal University at Bejai Church hall, Mangaluru on Saturday, June 4.

Addressing the gathering Dr B M Hegde said, “Today, if a child really wants to go to school, then there is something unusual. The reasons are the flaws in our education system. The root of education is to get best out of the students. It is not the teacher who needs to deliver instead the student who has to deler. Today our education system has made our students mere mug pots.”

“The emphasis of the MARS is to make an interactive learning where student learns and explores new dimensions of knowledge. Competing with others is mediocrity and one should always strive for excellence. Excellence is competing with oneself. We should strive to be better than what we were before. I want students at MARS to compete with oneself and strive for excellence.” he added.

“Today's education system makes the students so much secluded that they will not know the outer world. The motto of the education should to be to build healthy minds. There are hundreds of students in Delhi suburbs who cannot go to school because they do not have a pair of trousers to wear and do our children know this? So I want MARS to create curiosity among students to know how the outer world runs and create compassion for others.

“Science is the curiosity to learn nature but today teaching nature a lesson has become science. Today science has taken the wrong path. Learn from nature because it has lot to teach you. I wish all the best to MARS and officially declare MARS inaugurated,” he said.

Fr Robert D'souza, principal of Lourdes Central School in his presidential address said, “MARS is a progressive learning centre conceptualized by two academicians. The focus is on the competitive exams like CET, JEE and others. Students can face these exams with confidence at MARS. Education will have long term benefit on the society and country’s economy on the whole. Education is seen as a centre for creativity and innovation. I believe MARS is an effort in this direction. I wish and congratulate this institution very best.”

Dr Reena Alva, managing director of MARS welcomed the gathering while Professor Sureshnath, chairman of advisory committee MARS gave introduction on MARS.

Praveen Kumar, director academics, MARS, Kollegal Sharma, scientist CFTRI, Harish Bhat, scientist at EWRG, Anil Alva, scientist ISRO and others were present.
