Kasargod, Jun 8: Abdul Basheer (32) said to be a Saudi citizen has been homeless for the last four years with no trace of his origin. He has been languishing at Manjeshwar Pavoor Snehalaya rehabilitation centre for the last seven months.
Management at Snehalaya do not know what to do with him. Basheer was admitted in Snehalaya on December 20, 2015 on directions from district administration. After that neither the officials nor people representatives have inquired about him.
Basheer was taken into custody by the police in Kasargod while he was wandering suspiciously in September, 2012. He was later produced in the court and subjected to two years imprisonment. He completed two years of imprisonment in Kannur prison and another one month as he did not have money to pay fine. He was released on December 9.
He looked like mentally ill patient while in prison. Therefore he was admitted to Calicut mental hospital for one year from April 24, 2014.
The officials contacted Saudi embassy while a case against him was in progress in the court, but could not obtain any information about his origin. He had given his father's name as Sayyed Hussain Makkanakkas Arhathul Uloom from Saudi during police questioning. However his family could not be located with that information.
He was a source of headache for Kasargod police after his release from prison. No records were found on him when he was arrested. Finally he was sent to Pavoor Snehalaya as per orders from Kasargod district magistrate and deputy commissioner.
Basheer is said to have worked in Saudi mosque before reaching Bangladesh and later to Kolkata with migrating workers. He was in Hyderabad for few years. He had come by train to Kasargod later where he was caught by the police. His father is said to be from Pakistan and mother from Burma. He wants to meet his mother and family members.
This is the summary of the information received from Basheer. But it is not sure that he is a Saudi national. But apathy from district administration in finding a way out for Basheer has been criticized by many people.
Stany Mathew, Director of Project, Snehalaya, laments that the district administration has not taken follow up action after admitting Basheer in Snehalaya. “Basheer should be sent to his parents as soon as possible,” he said.
