Mangaluru, Jun 10: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC), A B Ibrahim, has permitted collection and sale of sand locally between June 16 and 21, duly observing that the blanket ban placed on sand mining between June 15 and August 15 is likely to affect construction and other works in the district for want of sand.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday June 9, he said that the people are permitted to procure sand within and district and store the same for attending to works till June 21. He however, reiterated that transportation of sand outside the district will remain banned during this period. He also said that after August 15 before sand transportation begins, sand transportation vehicles should compulsorily fit GPS. He also informed that special squads have been formed to keep vigil over the enforcement of sand transportation ban during the period of ban.

The DC also informed that closed circuit television cameras have been fitted at eight strategic spots to keep an eye on illegal sand movement, and that its control has been given to the office of the superintendent of police.
