Christian sect wants to observe ‘Sabbath’, petitions HC to change exam dates

Daijiworld Media Network-Bengaluru (RJP)

Bengaluru, Jun 10: The South Central India Union of Seventh Day Adventist Group (SDAG) has approached the State High Court with a petition which asks the court to direct PU Board to reschedule supplementary examinations.

The PU supplementary exams are scheduled for July 2 and 9 respectively. Both these dates fall on Saturday.

The petitioners have said that the SDAG Christians observe Saturday as the day of ‘Sabbath’ throughout the year and are not expected to engage in any type of work on that day. Hence the petition says that the SDAG students cannot write exams on that day and the court should tell the PU board to change the date of exams.

“The practice of 'Sabbath' is a command issued by religious law and it should be strictly observed and practised,” the petition says.

"A representation was also given to the director of PU Board not to conduct any exams on Saturdays as students from SDAG cannot attend it, but the representation went unheeded." the petition reads.

The petitioners say that scheduling of the exams on two Saturdays is a major problem for the sect to observe Sabbath, "SDAG students will have no other option. This will be tantamount to violation of the freedom to profess, practise and propagate the religion as enshrined in Article 25(1) of the Constitution of India. The department, which is state machinery, has to protect and preserve religious observations. The timetable of the exams directly comes in the way of the community’s religious practice," the petition continues.

Hearing the petition on Thursday June 9, Justice Aravind Kumar directed the state government to file objections and adjourned the next hearing to June 13.

PThe commandment in Exodus 20:8-11 states that the seventh day of the week, Saturday, is the day which the Lord ed as the day of rest and worship. However, in the New Testament the Christian church began to worship and rest on the first day of the week, Sunday. Are most Christians violating the Sabbath commandment by worshipping on the first day of the week rather than the seventh day? I do not think so.

God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day. He did this to establish a pattern of work and rest for man to follow.

A Pattern of Rest and Work

The basis for the command to observe the Sabbath, as stated in Exodus 20:11, is that God rested on the seventh day after six days of work, and that God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it. The Sabbath day was instituted as a day of rest and worship. The people of God were to follow God's example in His pattern of work and rest.

However, as Jesus said in correcting the distorted Sabbath view of the Pharisees,

“The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.”
    —Mark 2:27

The point Jesus made is that the Sabbath was not instituted to enslave people, but to benefit them. The spirit of Sabbath observance is continued in the New Testament observance of rest and worship on the first day of the week.

Exam is a test and not some kind work. Everyone has his own holy day. RCs on sunday, hindus on tuesday, muslims on friday and may be people belonging to other religions on other days of the week. If we take into account all the religions, all the days should be d as holidays and there should be no work at all.

Imagine you are stranded somewhere with no connectivity to get out of that place and its a Saturday. What do you do about your Sabbath rituals ? Will you not pray for life than the rituals ?

Similarly, pray for your future that the exam brings to you and let go the rituals for once. Life is there to practice faith but if the train leaves, you will remain an illiterate !

If the government falls for this plea, other religions too will claim their rights to have examinations postponed to another day soon there will be no days left in a week as there are so many religions to contend with. God has not chosen a specific day to be sabbath or holy the so-called holy "men" have dictated it for ages and order their sheep to follow.

There is congressional prayer for Muslims on every friday and the day is most important in a week days and therefore friday is holiday on that sense in most of the Muslim country. That does not mean that other week days are bad. "Sabbat" (is arabic word for saturday) is holiday for jews and its their prayer day.

We indians consider only sunday is weekly holiday and other days are normal working day unless otherwise Hindus, Muslims, christians and Sikhs festivals falls on that day. Its ok to conduct exam on friday or saturday

Unfortunately,I do not understand what difference it really makes. Am a christian too. I understand if the exams were on Christimas or Easter day .Students cannot concentrate as these are Only christian major Festivities and all would want to participate these festivities with mas, preparations etc. But i think Sabbath day should not have any problem. They can pray, concentrate and study with much more dedication. More over we need to consider other religion students as well who are in majority ( Muslims,Hindus etc..) am sure if there is any postponement in exams the students will like as they get more time to study. But its really not needed based on Sabbath day. We as Christians learn to sacrifice we can let go this as well!

let them do whatever they want. don't change the examination dates. if we keep making changes for religious purposes, this will follow a trend. please reduce concessions given due to religious purposes. Our country doesn't need anymore religion, it's too much as it is. :P
