Kundapur, Jun 14: “The party has trusted me a farmer and an ordinary Congress activist and has provided me an opportunity to represent the state for 36 years. Congress is the only party that gives such opportunity for an ordinary worker with pro country thoughts. Congress has sacrificed lives for the country,” said new Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes.
He was responding in the felicitation programme held under the aegis of Congress committee Byndoor and Block Congress Committee Vandse at Katbelthur Bhadramahakali auditorium here.
“Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid strong foundation for the country. Indira Gandhi vowed to dispel poverty. Rajiv Gandhi had the ambition that India should be number one in the world. Such leaders have sacrificed for the country. Questioning their names is unfortunate. We should have self esteem. There should be changes in our lives. Resources should be put to good use. Everybody should think about development in the country,” he said.
District in charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said that Oscar Fernandes who was being elected as member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha during the 36 long years has worked for the development of the district. “Development projects such as Konkan Railway, four lane roads etc have the hard work of Oscar Fernandes. His contribution to strengthen the party by inspiring the party workers is immense. On the whole development work has happened through him,” he said.
MLA K Gopala Poojary presided over the programme. MLC Pratap Chandra Shetty congratulated Oscar Fernandes.
