Mangaluru: Confusion looms over new permits for private buses in DK, Udupi

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, June 16: The circular regarding integrated area plan issued by the Karnataka transport ministry on June 10, has raised questions whether it will hit the privately owned transport system that is accepted to a large extent in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

As the ministry intends to follow uniform policy, no new permits will be issued to private buses. The circular does not state if there is provision for renewal of present permits. There are 413 city buses, 594 service buses and nearly 50 contract carriage buses in Mangaluru. Besides nearly 100 buses with permits obtained in Udupi, Chikkamagaluru and other places are plying in the districts. It is not known whether their permits will be renewed.

Non renewal of private bus permits may put an end to their nearly 100 years long satisfactory service. It has caused anxiety among private bus owners and thousands of staff who depend on private buses for their living. There is also no answer to what will be done to the buses if their services come to an abrupt end.

The private vehicles in Hubballi-Dharwad are allowed to run till their permits expire. There is no scope for renewal of their permits. No temporary or time based permits will be issued later as per the circular. However whether private permit holders in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi will be allowed to function has remained a question.

In-charge senior RTO and deputy commissioner of transport G S Hegde said that permits are being renewed once in five years at present. “The office had received 128 applications for new permits. Nearly 350 applications received earlier were pending. However as per the new circular by the transport ministry, there is no scope for permits to new buses,” he said.

Rajavarma Ballal, president of Canara bus owner's association said that the private bus service was started in 1915. “The government does not want private buses even though we have served the people keeping their welfare in mind. We will be submitting our objections to the government and the court regarding the new notification after obtaining the opinion of legal experts,” he said.

We do need private buses. BUT, shouting of cleaners & conductors, irritating whistle noise, over crowded trips, deadly high speed, reckless overtaking, unchecked seating arrangements, no uniforms & badges for crew etc make the passengers to cry for alternatives. Private bus owners have to join together to strictly maintain the high standard of their operations.

"Non renewal of private bus permits may put an end to their nearly 100 years long *satisfactory* service."
Wow! cant believe the above article says that! We have seen enough atrocities by the private buses. Enough of these people killers. We don't need these monsters on road. If anyone really worried about the drivers and the staff, let government convert these buses to government city buses and employ the same people. Please dont support these private bus lobby.

Rahul, I totally agree with you. Having stayed in Bangalore and Mysore, I had no option than to use the Government bus and that my was worst commuting experience . The condition of the buses, cleanliness and the services by the staff is rock bottom. The staff have no respect for the passengers. Since they are unionised they think that they can dominate over passengers. None of buses ply on time. Compared to the brand new well maintained private buses, they are rust boxes. Even if the government buses come, they will not help the locals as the staff will all be from other parts. Even if you travel on the Bantwal line on these buses, you will know their service standards. Further if KSRTC buses are introduced in the districts, they will not be use to the taxpayers, as the corporation continues to incur losses and they are paid from the tax payer money. We say that the private buses are causing accidents. Does it mean that the government buses have not caused accidents. We all the from the twin district should oppose this as it will pull the transport system of the district to the abysmal levels

boss... it may be good somewhere.. but here in mangalore and udupi they contribute to the maximum on fatal accidents. We the public have fed up of these private busses, their competition, deadly drive.. some where it's mentioned 100 years long satisfactory service ... ? who the hell told this. Just because of their owner's desire to get maximum collection and in turn maximum commission for these drivers / conductors, they are ready to kill any number of people on the road, hit the vehicles on their way....

We are fed up, and crying for govt busses from decades. just due to the lobby by these bus owners, it's held. at least now let us clean up the city from these evils called city / private busses.

In a free economy with a large population, its imperative both govt. and private buses flourish side by side. But traffic authorities should see that permits are granted to new routes and to areas where there are no buses or a few buses.

If private airlines can fly alongside the national carrier why not private buses.
If it is about safety and convenience of public what the governament is worried about then let them formulate strict guidelines and impliment them.

We want govt. bus service in DK & Udupi district so that we feel our own transport.Government is paying subsidy during loss to KSRTC from our hard earned tax paid money but we have no facility of that service. Who says pvt is giving good sevice? In case of an accident private owners never pay any spot compensation to dependents of victims. Victims dependents have to fight for years in the court for compensation. There is several schemes in KSRTC for the welfare of the public.

Hey, Are you seriously talking about "Unfriendly Behavior" by Private Bus People?? As if Government Bus people are welcoming you with flowers. Let Government Bus stop properly in main Junctions first. They will get salary however if bus runs empty also and finally we have to suffer. I salute private bus people for their best service and humanity. If any dunked man comes in bus also there will be no one to throw him out of the bus in Government bus which never happens in Private bus.
