Bus topples above underpass, miraculous escape for passengers

Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur (EP)

Kundapur, Jun 16: A private bus speeding from Kundapur lost control of the driver at Kota national highway 66 and toppled above the underpass on Thursday morning, June 16 causing traffic jam for some time. 45 passengers in the bus, driver and conductor miraculously escaped with minor injuries.

The bus driver, driving the bus carelessly and too fast, was trying to overtake a lorry when the incident occurred. It was raining heavily and water was flowing on the road. The bus hit the side concrete barricade before toppling on the road. Though the driver applied brakes, the bus did not stop immediately as there was water on the road, it is said. There were 34 women passengers in the bus.

Major mishap averted

The national highway authority has constructed a strong concrete wall barricade. Therefore the bus hit the barricade without falling down from the top of the underpass after it toppled. If it had fallen down, it would have fallen on the vehicles passing on service road causing loss of many lives.

The toppled bus hindered traffic for more than an hour. Kota sub-inspector (SI) Kabbalraj and staff arrived at the place of the accident within a few minutes and made way for traffic on service road. The SI got the bus lifted with the help of crane with highway workers and cleared the traffic.

Zilla panchayat member Raghavendra Kanchan, social activist Keshava Koteshwara, Kota panchayat's Thimma Poojary and Saligrama town panchayat member Bhoja Poojary visited the place and extended their help.

government has already sanctioned Jrnurm buses in udupi and mangalore, but due to heavy pressure or may be threat from the pvt bus owners the buses are not released on the roads. the government has given us volvo buses from manipal to mangalore, since 5-6 years there has not been a single accident. because the drivers are not allowed to speed the buses over the limits. the construction of the bus bodies on the chasis here is not a perfect design, where the speeding buses goes out of control. these body built for the buses are for the speed on 50-60 only. another thing, the so called interceptor patrolling throughout the roads are blind i believe. they catch hold of people where their speed limit is 61km, what about these buses who keep speeding over 90km/hr and kill many innocent lives. Also where are the speed governors fixed to the yellow plate vehicles. we can see the buses, trucks, heavy vehicles whos speed governor does not allow to cross the speed of 60kms/hr travelling at speed above 100km/hr.

Normal people is not heard to government. they treat bus travellers are low class and middle class people from which government employee are not benefited. if they were benefited they would have cared.

    Acche din... :D

Jack, When you write comments, you should be absolutely sure about your knowledge or survey!. Volvo buses on Udupi-Mangalore route have been involved in many accidents including a bus hitting a scooter and killing the couple!, moving into the forest area in Padubidri without any fatalities!, killing a pedestrian in Mulki etc etc. Please check these in Daijiworld itself!. Even today I will say that government volvo buses are driven at high speed, rash and always on the right of the 4 lane Kundapur-Surathkal 4-lane road!. Check yourself if you have any doubt!

No comments about these express buses as its useless. This will be another case that requires some greasing to officials and case file will vanish without a trace!. But the fact that Mr. Ballal has to answer is that - how come a bus company that is having 2000 cases in it is still running the killer buses!?. No, this is not from my pocket but a bragging by a big bus company owner when his bus met with an accident at Mulki when it hit a car!. The car owner said he will file a case and the bus owner blatantly said 'do whatever you want!, we have 2000 cases against us and our lawyer takes care of everything! We know all police officials and RTO and they will not touch us'!!!!!. This is the exact conversation that happened in front of me and few people gathered there!!!. So Mr. Ballal, this is the reason we support government buses because no one can touch you!!!

Everyday local buses from Kundapura to Mangalure route are playing with the life of passengers as well as the passerby and two wheeler. This is just because to catch the passengers as much as possible. But the driver of these buses doesn't care of others life. RTO should set the limit on these route because driving cars and two wheeler is more dangerous just because of the stupid bus drivers.

Now the days number of incidents increased and the time come for human lost his life on the road,so the RTO should take action on this issues like speed control (max 80kPH for all heavy hevy vehicles) reduce the number of buses on that same root also schedule for heavy trucks and trailers. major cause number of buses increased on same line they haven't enough collection on daily basis so they are rush for the collection also the filling high air pressure in tyres for avoid stress for while turn the steering, this will cause loose control while turning and poor braking control. this high tire pressure buses while travelling very uncomfortable and so much stress for passengers. the tire pressure increasing double pressure after tire warmed so they maintain the specific tire pressure all the times. For buses not necessary for fill high tire pressure.

when you open the DW site there is always news about RTA resulting deaths and serious injuries are we really do not value the human lives. For the financial protection every one should take a Personal Accident Insurance policy for 10 to 15 lacs rupees the premium is not expensive but it is really worth when tragedy strike us
