Manipal student Vinod Thomas designs toilet for trains, bags second prize

Media release

Manipal, Jun 17: Vinod Anthony Thomas has done Faculty of Architecture (FOA) and Manipal University proud by clinching the second prize at an all-India competition organized by Research Designs and Standards Organization, Lucknow.

In keeping with prime minister, Narendra Modi’s clean India initiative, Indian Railways decided to hold a public competition for waterless and odorless toilets in trains. The competition was to design such toilets for operation and maintenance.

Vinod's prize winning design

The jury comprised experts from Railways, industry and academia/research fields. Ten entries were shortlisted and the designers had to present their projects to the jury on May 31. Vinod’s design was adjudged the second best in the results announced on June 14 and bagged Rs 75,000 as prize money. However, the second place was shared by another designer, Rahul Garg and team member Saurabh Hans.

Vinod, a tenth semester student of FOA, has designed a toilet which does away with problems in the existing system of disposal of human waste on the tracks which is, “unhygienic, unethical and damaging to the environment,” he said. His project also mentions that the existing model of toilets are not subjected to effective flushing resulting in the accumulation of dirt and therefore the foul smell.

Vinod's design therefore, introduces a system of waste management, which prevents generation of foul smell and replacing the system of flushing toilets with water by a conveyor system carrying waste in a hermetically sealed pocket to a large collection bin to store waste and is run manually by a crank wheel. The bin has been designed in a way to reduce the amount of waste by way of decomposition and forced ventilation (evaporation of water).

Director, Faculty of Architecture, Prof Nishant H Manapure said that Vinod has brought laurels to Manipal University by bagging the second prize at the important competition. “It’s first of its kind for FOA and am hopeful the students will showcase their talent in future also.”

I can only appreciate the young designers attempt.

While travelling around the world in rapid transport, this design seems to me too basic.

This design has lots of flaws such as
1.Toilet is not user friendly for physically challenged and old people
2.Wash basin is needs to be curve in order to reduce impact damage.
3.overflow drain is too far from toilet bowl and wash basin creating mess.
4.There is no shower facility for long distance traveller.

If Waste management should have been converted to energy India would have saved millions in Disle.

His design is too premature and far from EU and US standard.I wonder Juries have ever traveled the world?

    I concur Mr.Vivek statements.

When our 'make in India' indigenously designed Konkan Rly's Skybus structure to be demolished, sold off as scrap. The Germans and Swiss are perfected the technology and marketing the system.

In India Instead of adapting to a best technology is in offering we are calling for classic designs.

Copied concept combining both 1 and 2:

    1) A team from Cranfield University in the UK has developed a toilet that treats human waste in the home without external energy or water. The device marks a potentially significant advance for those in developing countries who suffer from diseases related to improper sanitation and sewage treatment.
    The Nano Membrane Toilet
Designed for single-household use. The toilet aims to treat human waste in the home without external energy or water. The flush uses a unique rotating mechanism to transport the mixture into the toilet without demanding water whilst blocking odour and the user’s view of waste.

When was first Nuclear device got exploded?
When was geo synchronous satellites got launched on Indian devised rockets?

Congratulations to Vinod Thomas. India is changing. "Where there is a will, there is a way" Youngsters should be encouraged so that they can utilise their skills for the development of our country. For many years our government did not change much in public transport or any other departments. It is just like running age old design of Fiat Padmini and Ambassador cars. Now, we have to thank Internet technology which is available at your fingertips. Just google toilet decomposing system and you get all the information eg..Maltrum toilets fig 6.4

Vinod Anthony Thomas’s did not impress me as it could be I find this could be improved more efficient

i.e 5) to make the wash basin arc shape so that angle exposed will reduce impact while train apply brakes or accelerates. 1) W.C could be mounted like arc shape washbasin can be mounted , thus leaving ample space in between.
    2) If so place grab raill both the side which will serve the purpose of very old people and handicap people.

It doesn't use water but conveyor system operated with the crank wheel operated in the place of flush. If water is used then it might cause more problems as people need to get used to new system.

Bravo! this is how our innovations should be. They should address the need of the hour. I don't think ever since the British introduced railways in our country, anything has been done towards scientific way of disposal of human waste. It's a different thing that it'd take few decades before we implement this in our trains!

Congratulations dear. Proud of you. It is very true that the present way of disposing human waste on tracks is very unhygienic and spoils the environment and which leads to movement of dogs and animals on the tracks. Apart the waste if gets decomposed and can be properly dealt with just like it is done in flights. Good luck. wish you all the best.

if every department engage university students in their projects they can get very good ideas, presently only DRDO is engaged with IIT s for small share in their research work. I wish if this happens in a proper way then we will never have to import anything from foreign country other than oil
