Action begins in city- Police check school vehicles for compliance

Daijiworld Media Network-Mangaluru (JD)

Mangaluru, Jun 22: In the wake of the Trasi school van accident that took place on June 21 resulting in the tragic death of 8 children, the traffic police in city conducted an inspection drive of various school vehicles and warned the drivers carrying more children than the limit.

Teams led by the Traffic ACP Udaya Nayak inspected the vehicles at four major places namely Ladyhill, Bendoorwell, Navbharath and near Rosario school.

There were also instances when about 14-18 children were carried in Omni vehicles and the police warned the drivers in these cases.

The drivers have been instructed to carry students within the prescribed limits.

On Tuesday June 21, district superintendent of police (SP) Bhushan Gulabrao Borase had said that measures would be taken to contain accidents in the city and he had revealed about the drive to be implemented soon.

Police also checked school vehilces in Bantwal area.

It is said " Better Late Than Never " !! Our Police dept has woken up after this tragic incident in Trasi. Never mind, but dont do it to eye washing of public. Ensure RTO /Police dept that you punish those who offend these rules laid down by the DC. Ensure you have given maximum numbers of students to ferry in each category of vehicles. Police dept you all know what school vans do in city, still you have closed eyes so far, for reasons best known to your dept. Does it take 08 innocent children's lives to act on these issues. No I dont think so. Every day, thousands of school children are ferried by hundreds of Pvt vehicles. Manner in which these vehicles go on roads is un-imaginable. Many people will agree with me. They are rash in driving, harsh in attitude, rough with co-drivers on roads, impatient with traffic rules, violent on horning enroute. They want their way on roads, so you give them side what ever the circumstances are. My husband & I always wondered why they play with so many children's lives by behaving so. !! Look at what happens.
Police dept / RTO, please ensure your checking continues till proper discipline falls in place. Please continue to punish the offenders till others learn a lesson. Other wise all these eye washing checks are futile.
Look at those Omni cars how they are altered with a bench in between , so many children can be accommodated. God save our children.!!

Last month there was heavy rain and drainage problem and MCC officials woke up.Now after Trasi accident police woke up.If you drive from Mangalore to Kundapur you need 100 eyes to check which road is being repaired and which is new.In this case it was because of Omni drivers mistake who did not put right indicator.Let children soul rest in peace.

Dear friends,It is easy to blame school car or auto....i agree with over loads and rush driving . but what about the over speed of buses and other vehicles. in school zone ,school buses and car as moe priority then over speed buses and other vehicles??? did we stop for a while ??? In school limits , speed limits should be 20 km per hour . But that bus seems to be more then 60 kmh . so it cost more damage .so please give classes to over speed and rush drivers so we can stop such a sad days .

Why allow small children stand in front portion of 2 wheelers. Parents should feel guilty of this practice because the child in front is like a protective guard for the rider who will remain safe in the event of accident as the child in front is a safety cushion for the rider. Putting the child in danger is irresponsible attitude on the part of parents vis-a-vis negligence on the part of traffic police. This practice should be stopped immediately. Even Insurance Companies should not pay the compensation.

Not a single MLA is interested in changing transport law and regulations.
Do we have a MP in Mangalore, sounds like he has gone on self exile after murder of RTI activist in Mangalore.
Our PM is inviting NRI to come back but does he know that we have only 6 feet road in many places.
The bureaucrats are the one who responsible for these accidents.
It is their duty to explain the government on the road safety compliance according to the population growth.
The planning commission is neutralised by the PM but PM has no time to form new team due to his foreign trips.

May I request you all to pay attention towards Pic 7 and Pic 11 from top, where the kids are depending on their parents itself for the transport. Look at the pic 7, the mother is carrying the bag of her daughter and in parallel she is driving, that also in horrible rainy weather conditions. What she can do here? She has to focus on driving, her standing kids, plus a weighing bag of her kid which is on her shoulder and that also over a slippery rain coat. Surely she may not be able to drive comfortably. But what to do? May our Education board, School Principals / HMs / all teachers may focus on this, they may waive off giving zig-zag homeworks at least during the rainy weather? Is it sooo required that very minors below Standard III, IV are required to carry a bulky bag which is obstacle while driving/ even to carry while normal walking too. Some important books may be retained at classrooms in cabinets rather than they were loaded to be carried by kids.
The same situation is at Pic 11 too where a daughter having her very lightest holds to her Father. The kids they even may not be knowing what could be the impact that can go wrong. State to seriously think over which vehicles should allowed to carry school kids and which not. Seriously should think to depute police checks at both ends of the road that approaching school in order to control the vehicles approaching opposite directions.

We cannot bring back those lives lost, but can prevent similar ones in future by learning lessons from this tragedy. Being at place of bereaved families its very hard to digest the fact that those little ones who born front of them, grown in their hands, made them happy while growing, and now just will be the memories. The 4 families lost all kids. Truly pathetic!

May their souls rest in peace.

This is not the way to implement the rule. Just giving warning and allowing the vehicles. Now its the responsibilities of all the parents who care their children. Parents should not send children in fully loaded vehicles, next vehicles should be painted in yellow. Nowhere its mentioned by daijiworld or by press meet conducted by Police. Also point to be noted, drivers will not paint yellow bcz after school trip or during sundays or school holidays they take omni for other trips like marriage, picnic etc. Parents should stop checking for cheap fares offered by drivers.

Police and District Administration should immediately take action without waiting for any political approval and ensure that the vehicle should only carry according to the seating capacity approved by RTA. This should be applied to all buses and Auto operated by schools and private owners. Police should cease the vehicles and cancel the permit of the schools for violating these norms. Otherwise the situation will remain as it is and the the people will take it lightly. This checking and other safety measures should be permanent solution rather than temporary measure. Whoever may be the violators, should be dealt with seriousness and should not taken as lightly.

This is question of precious lives. Now hat happens is that after something serious happens, concerned department take some seriousness for few days and after that situation becomes as normal. No fear among the public.
