Drivers protest irked by school vehicles’ directives, charges to go up drastically

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, Jun 23: In the aftermath of major accident at Trasi where there were several deaths and injuries, the police department has laid down rules restricting the number of children that can be ferried in the vehicles.

The police have warned and imposed fines on those vehicles which violated the rules. However the taxi and auto drivers, who were annoyed with the restrictions, cancelled their trips on Thursday, June 23 here and protested.

Udupi district police on Wednesday had warned Omni cars and rickshaw drivers who were ferrying children in large numbers. They seized 6 rickshaws in Manipal and 2 rickshaws in Kemmannu. There is anguish among vehicle drivers with regard to it. As per directions of police department, there are restrictions that only 6 children can be transported in rickshaws and 12 children in Omni cars. This can be a burden for rental vehicles and middle class parents.

Rickshaw drivers were charging Rs 300 for each child when the rickshaw used to carry 10 to 12 children. They may have to charge between Rs 700 to Rs 900 after this. Omni vehicles will have to make two trips to ferry the children. The drivers who have not met with accident between 10 to 15 years also are put to hardship because of an accident in a distant place, said Subrahmanya, Nagesh two drivers and Sumathi, a woman driver of Omni car in Udupi.

Parent Muraleedhar Bhat said that school vehicle drivers are responsible and do take care of children like their own. “They drop them till schools and leave them till their residences”, he said. He urged that the rules should apply not only for rickshaws but also for buses.

On the whole, the protests following police strictly enforcing rules have made the parents worried. Some English medium schools have ignored the protests as if the problem is not theirs. Some children had to stay at home due to the protests on Thursday. Some parents took their children to school in their private vehicles.

whenever such kind of accidents and tragedies happen there will be a commotion everywhere. Police book cases parents protests and what not. But after few days everybody will forget and rules and regulations and punishment, fine etc. will go astray. There should be some sort of strictness anout vehicles carrying children to schools.

Shekar Moily Padebettu, Udupi/India, why attack only the Omni and Auto's ferrying children to school. What about the private city buses in the twin districts. Loaded with not only adults even children, some hanging on the foot boards. No rules for these private bus mafia. They can carry only 42 seating, 10-15 standing,2 conductor and driver, we in the twin districts see the buses filled with passengers above the maximum limit. The bus owner's make a lot of money by over loading the bus above the maximum limit. The authorities should look into it, if not introduce Govt. buses.

Government should not bulge to this tactics of drivers.Government should be very firm in their directives. Now a days education has become a business rather than education institutions and again it has become a mafia. There should be a limit in ferrying children either by Omni bus o autorickshwas.Of course as far as parents are concerned they want comforts to their children and they feel it is their prestige to send their children by Omni or rickshaws.Drivers, they are greedy for money, can go to any extent at the cost of precious little lives. When the government directives are issued, they start protest. But why for?.This is Government's duty to ensure the safety of school going children.Drivers must obey this directive.

    1. Money is not everything. Safety comes first always. Our life is priceless in this world. These rules will protect you and the little Angels you carry everyday in your vehicles.
    2. Proper speed limit should be enforced during school hours(morning and evening) only in the school zones. No horns or speeding.
    3. There should be huge sign boards enforcing school crossings in the school zones.
For once let us put the safety of little children first before MONEY.

Something wrong with these drivers!. It shows they value money and not lives!. Who will care a couple of hundred rupees more if it is the safety of their loved ones!. I urge police department to be strict and not get pressurized by these tactics!. At the same time since it was the fault of the overspeeding bus, even buses have to be made to install speed governors and also blaring horns and tape recorders removed from them. All violations should be fined to the maximum and repeat violation should result in cancel of the permit.

While it is good to impose restrictions on drivers, the district authorities seem to have ignored the main killer - NH.66. I wonder which Engineer designed and built this road. No u turns, no proper left and right turns, no speed breakers at cross roads, and most important no proper markings and no street lights. During rainy nights the road is completely invisible, so people have to drive with heart in the mouth. Its amazing how people who drive at night, survive on this road.

Let the drivers protest but the Administration should not flexible the rules. If the Omni & Auto drivers cannot make profit, let them stop carrying school children. Automatically big buses will be landed from the private parties or schools to carry the children instead of many number of Autos and Omnis. We don't want to lose some more children just because of driver's livelihood and profit. Let them find any other business to make more money.

This 6 feet gulli road won't do.Secondly coming to the point of school bus it would be better if kids come on the big bus till the main road and walk a little to their house..Now a days many parents don't want their children to walk even few steps..

Normal earning person cant spay 900 per kids for school transport. Same way a auto driver cant save anything with 300 RS , with3-4 legal 2 trips. Overall schools need to provide suitable buses , if anyone want a school to open need to provide basic infrastructure including buses,> but situation is hopeless now. Especially school mafia, all parties same, I wish AAp can do something

Instead of increasing charges, why can't we think to drastically reduce the vehicles cost and transport charges?

    Humans are transported like goods.
Commuters are standing and hanging on vehicles.
Roads are flooded with tiny vehicles, which neither solve problems nor allow the traffic to move.
Pride, ego, competition and comparison make the general public to face the adverse consequences on roads.

Perhaps, we prefer more to suffer problems in isolation, than enjoy solutions, through communication, negotiation and change implementation.

Do you agree that the Gravity Power of Earth is the most neglected natural force?
(No need to produce, store or recharge, being free, abundant, anytime and everywhere, unlike electric, solar and wind energy.)

Do you believe that the massive weight of commuters and goods on wheels can be used as a powerful pushing force?
(No fuel consumption, no air pollution and sound pollution from vehicles, peaceful society, stable economy and clean environment.)

While mobile revolution with incredible solutions, why we need to suffer automobile evolution miserably, with severe problems?
(Transportation and Communication are prime sectors of our economy.
How we can have tortoise and rabbit styles as two bulls of the same cart?)

Do you agree that the surface transport sector is ripe for a rapid revolution?
(Though volume of commuters and goods are growing rapidly, there is no adequate transport facilities to meet the demand).

Do you support an idea, which can make a Revolutionary Change?
(We need to think different and implement change, to see a World of Difference.)

There should not be any compromise between traffic safety /traffic regulations vs. monetary benefits or hardships concerning school children's transportation to and from schools. Rules are made on to protect innocent people’s lives and not to oblige as per general public demand. At this rate peoples demands will never end.

That means more traffic on road. In India living day to day life is like a war zone. If school has bus they will charge heavily. Again parents will look for cheaper option, put their loved one life in risk in order to meet their both ends meet. Story will repeat for Amm Admi again and again. After it is matter of survival.

This is very strange move from the drivers. Strike is not the answer to solve the problem. Yes strict rules to be implemented to safe guard the school children. Parents have to compensate if they want to see their kid’s safety, Let the strike continue and authority should not compromise with such agitations. Later drivers will realize when such disasters happens to them. authorities should restrict private buses speed limit in highways.

    Yes.

It has still its value in place. In today's times, everybody has the money. But the greed to crave for more and the urge to satisfy oneself exceedingly more than ones limit is the human tendency of the day. It is taken for granted till YOU ARE STINKING RICH. Once you become a pauper, you realise its real value.

True that money can't bring back the dead.

Nowadays people worship money more than the creator and think that they survive only for money.

We can advise all the parents to stitch the lips of their children while sending to school to avoid the noise as per your advise. Middle class people cannot spend more money on the children's transportation as everybody having their own budget. So don't make mockery of middle class and poor people. Keep your Sanghi mentality aside and try to become a human being with humanity.

Very simple , school has to compulsorily provide transportation to children. Let them charge little bit more but it will be safe for the children

Another option is let the Government provide, some percentage of transportation fees to school who provide transportation without any Parent's complain..

Normally, accidents may not happen, but if it happens even once, the result may be devastating.
