Mangaluru: School car owners-drivers meet, resent admin directions

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangauru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 24: Members of Car Owner and Drivers Association, who are disturbed by the new order of Dakshina Kannada district administration making it mandatory for vehicles used for transporting children to schools to follow certain guideline.s, met at Ladyhill here on Thursday June 23.

"The district administration has said that only eight children can be carried in cars to school. This will give rise to financial problems. Therefore, this limit should be increased to a minimum of 12. At the same time, the rule about painting the vehicles yellow should be withdrawn, as going on hire becomes a problem thereafter. We have already entered into agreement with parents to transport their children to schools. It is very difficult to discontinue this service suddenly, and time is needed to convince the parents about the new problems that have cropped up. Therefore, the policemen should desist from acting against car drivers carrying children," they stated.

Police action on June 22

The leaders apprehended that the drivers might seek to take children through alternative routes to avoid police action, and accidents can happen in such instances. The school children might reach schools with delay, the meeting noted. It decided to ask the administration to meet demands of the car drivers and request it to extend period for compliance with rules. The participants sought a week's time during which the police should desist from acting against violators, to enable them to meet the norms.

These issues were discussed with MLC, Ivan D'Souza, and thereafter, a memorandum was submitted seeking compliance with various demands.

The office bearers of the association will meet again on Saturday to take stock of the situation. The office bearers will meet district in-charge miniser, B Ramanath Rai, and hand him over their memorandum of demands.

Whatever you do to the vehicles carrying school children, you cannot stop others deliberately coming and hitting at it.

General Public should be made aware of the modesty for such buses. We have seen plenty of times when the yellow color buses stops to pick up or the kids, the general cars and even cars driven by doctors honking horn at it rapidly creating urgency scene for driver of bus and for the kids, which can surely some incident. If such actions are seen from an educated persons then what we can expect from uneducated and always in hurry persons like private bus drivers?
Media should help in such public awareness.

Since National highway passes throughout the Dakshina Kannada district dividing it in two parts and in every junction the local traffic have to cross the speeding vehicles on Highway. Authorities need to place necessary speed breakers until provision of Overhead Bridge or Underpass is constructed.
NHRC sighs off telling that Highways cannot have speed breakers and instead police install Metal Barriers at some places to restrict the traffic. Again this does not happen in all the junctions.

I guess School buses are already in yellow color and comparatively Buses are safer than small vehicles. When Administration is trying to bring some law and order in place I guess we should obey them instead of questioning. There is no harm in painting the vehicles in yellow that are specially used to transport school children, they are not asking every vehicle to paint in yellow , in which children travel (e.g. private cars, bikes, where parents their kids) Yellow color is easy to notice and others can be cautious about the vehicle. I think its a good move from the Administration and hope everyone obeys it.

As per the newspaper reports, what has been implemented by the RTO/Police Dept is in consonance with the Supreme Court Directives. Apparently, all the authorities - the school, parents, auto/maruti vans, school buses, etc., have conveniently been ignoring the directives. Can the authorities now preach violation of supreme court directives?

I said already many times in previous article as well. No one will paint yellow, now see the result Union came in stating same, they cant do other trips if they paint yellow. No rules will be implemented in INDIA. If rule comes there is protest from one side. From hundred years same going. Why they want to do double work, I mean other trips like marriage, picnic ? When district Admin is giving some rule it shd be followed by every citizen even me. Please all follow rules. If we go to other country's we follow rule and obey why ?

Parents should think about their children. When the can give donations in lakhs for the future of their children why can, t they spare few more hundreds for their life? If u agree for the demands of the drivers they will once again start to take more than the capacity after few days and same old things will repeat.

Why people are not understanding the safety of kids? They want to make only money? Even though the consequence very high.

Now it's the time to decide the parents whether they want their children safety or money.

It's school management responsibility to arrange the safe transportation to a kids. When they take high fat fee and donations.

Some Kinder gardens Pvt schools and primary schools charge 1lakh to 2 lakh annual charges. Equivalent to Engineering college. Why govt. Is not taking any action on that. It's purely school management responsibility to the kids safely.

ITS gud police got their wakeup call.but unfortunately 8 innocent kids were to sacrifice their precious life.
NOW for how long police keep their vigilance a week..month then what..ha it'd be deja vu .. few more deaths & its so y'day once more.& the cycle continues.
WE are incapable of doing anything long lasting.always in a quick fix.thats our solution for any problem.
1ST make it very very clear omni is NOT school bus.max kids it can take is not more than 8 atmost 10.never ever more that.yeah drivers are poor but kids need not to die for his sake.
2)ANY van/rik taking kids shud never ever cross speed limit of 40k/h.
3)ALL these vans must be painted with specific color fitted with all sort of emergency kit.if found violation, police must act tough & seize the vehicles without any sympathy.
4)ROADS ya they too are major killers, make local corporate,MLA 100% responsible for any accidents happening due2 damaged roads.ban them from contesting election.
5)SCHOOLS: dont impose timing rigidly.allow @least 20 min flexibility.dont punish kids for this.talk to parents.
6)PARENTS: dont always opt for cheap transport.its your kids life.also dont be obsessed with some distant 'prestigious' schools.go for nearest schools @least till 7th std.nothing wrong in that infact your kid'll immensely benefit.
MLA:your job is not over by uttering few condolence words & meeting couple of SP's & DC.you should form a expert committee carry a detailed study within specified time.get to the bottom of problem.sincerely work for solving it.its not jus not somebodys life.. you too along with your near & dear ones family travel on same road.so if not for others @least for your own sake keep the roads pothole free.

Foremost, yellow painted vehicles are SCHOOL TRANSPORT vehicles, not public transport. Therefore, if the authorities are asking for yellow vehicles, the vehicles should be school-owned, not privately. Auto/Omni owners are right - they can't use yellow painted vehicles for other purposes. In this way they will lose their clients and parents will have to look for alternative solution. The limitation of number per vehicle is justified - you have made/saved money till now - think that the honeymoon is over - no alternative !

Secondly, yellow painted vehicles are out on the road just twice a day and in rare cases when excursions or other activities take place. Tell us, are the roads prepared to take up approx. 10 vehicles from each school ? Imagine the additional number of vehicles will be introduced if all schools are to adopt this rule ?

Thirdly, with school fees rising sky-high, what will be the impact with schools having their own transport ? And, now long a supplier will take to cater to such a drastic demand of vehicles !

Questions are many while the notice is very short which is conflicting. Understandable that the measures are for our own children's safety but imposing them overnight is stressful to all !

It is ok to discipline and regulate vehicle carrying school children. But, when is the administration going to discipline over speeding killer buses, drivers and their owners. Generally, the drivers are arrested and then let off when matter cools off. and then it is business as usual. For all cases, first the owner should be arrested instead of the drivers because behavior is directed from the top. Recently, I saw president of the DK bus association defending the bus owners and blaming the system for all the ills. Once you start arresting the owners and permanently cancelling their permits, this menace is going to continue for ever.

If it's loss for drivers then leave it .. Why do u want to jeopardize kids lives ?? It's high time School management starts their own transportation reaching all the students instead of these never budging DK drivers ... Airport drivers are well known to their attitude and now school drivers !!

The administration shouldn't bow down to Drivers plea ... If they don't obey the rules cancel their license

Safety of the kids comes first than economics. Over crowded vehicle is not an alternative at all for low cost. Kids will be in danger if an overcrowded vehicle meets with an accident. This apart, authorities has to enforce other road safety measures to stop reckless driving, maintain highway manners, improve road conditions, stop rule violations etc. Safety of kids is a non-negotiable matter. Parents please do not compromise on safety, If you cannot afford please send to nearby schools or less cost schools.

first the parents should learn some discipline.

then the local residents around the school should co-operate with students/parents/school authorities /police without ego.

    next comes other people.

yes, i am talking about sharada vidyalaya, kodialbail.....

its clearly mentioned near PVS kala kunj that during school hour, " it is one way " - that is the vehicles should enter from navabhrath circle, children at the agte, exit tp MG road. and should not enter from PVS kalakunj towards ocean pearl>>>>

dear daiji readers, just go there once & see how stupid / insensitive/arrogant uncivilized people we are.....

one policeman is struggling to teach our beloved fellow citizens... still people argue....

    - the MCC waste carrier ( heavy vehicle) comes in wrong side exactly at school time. ( it can come little later or before, or at least can come in proper direction or a small waste carrier can come but alas we are not bothered)

    - big vehicles like innova, fortuner, bmw, etc ( some of them belongs to highly qualified doctors, advocates as seen the cars!!!!) are being parked in mid-way blocking the entire road, while the child is being taken inside the compound. ( who cares about others!!!)

    - some local residents fight with genuine followers of one-way that it is residential area, so one-way principle can not be implemented ( remember this one way is required there only for 20-30 minutes per day!!!) - still we most educated citizens of india are not ready to co-operate , not ready to drive extra fe meters - only during those few minutes of the school timings - no it can not be one way... great!!!!!

this school is admitting more than one thousand students. how did they start so many classes in that narrow lane...

even after 20 years of functioning of school, there is no proper footpath in that entire stretch of small road. elderly grand parents are struggling to walk with little angels in the "charandi" with dirt during monsoon...
    first let us correct ourselves.

All the drivers of Omni, car and auto rickshaws must be abide by the directives of district administration in the best interest of school going children. There should not be any second thought in this regard. District administration must tighten this order very strictly and ask all the drivers to adhere very strictly. Don’t bulge to the pressure, tactics of these drivers. Reasons are many but solution is one. Stop carrying children more than specified number of 8.Parents should be convinced in this regard.

Even city, private bus owners/drivers should be asked to follow this directions/order strictly. This should not be one day or two day affair and should be permanent solution. Government cannot do anything of its own unless we public join hands with them.
STOP CARRYING MORE THAN EIGHT CHILDREN IN A CAR.YELLOW PAINTING SHOULD BE DONE,IF THEY WANT TO STAY IN THE RACE.DRIVERS SHOULD NOT TAKE ALTERNATIVE ROUTES TO AVOID POLICE CATCHING.RULE MEANS RULE.CHILDREN’S SAFETY IS IMPORTANT THAN YOUR GREED FOR EARNING.PUBLIC SHOULD JOIN HANDS WITH THE GOVERNMENT IN IMPLEMENTING THIS RULES VERY SERIOUSLY. JAI KARNATAKA, JAI HIND, JAI TULU NADU.

Everyone seems to be missing the point here. The real issue that needs to solved here is how to eliminate head-on collisions on National Highways. It would have been no less tragedy if a lone school child was killed. We are not talking about numbers here but how to improve the safety of our roads. Will reducing the number of children that travel in a school van avert another tragedy tomorrow?. The only thing that I can envision is it would not make big headlines. We need to get to the root of the problem. The drivers union have a point here. Economics of the area need to be taken into consideration. All stakeholders must be involved before coming out with knee-jerk solutions.

Safety of the children should be the priority of everyone.
If the school van is loaded with children, the driver will be certainly distracted and will not be able to sight the oncoming vehicles( I guess that's what happened in Trasy)
Police must be really strict to enforce this rule.
Alternatively every school need to have vans to ferry tier students to school.
Administration is right in insisting the rule to safeguard the lives of our children.

On which side of the fence is MLC, Mr Ivan D'Souza?

The vehicle drivers' union, or the police and children's safety?

One can't pretend to run with hare and hunt with the hounds.

Children's safety is paramount, and the police must not budge on this issue.
