Theft of gold ornaments worth Rs 1.5 lac from city temple

Mangaluru, Jul 19: Lord Somanatha temple on Goods Shed Road in the city was burgled by thieves on the night of Sunday July 17.

The thieves gained entry into the temple by breaking its door. They broke open the donation box located at Teertha Mantapa in the frontside of the temple. Thereafter, they entered the sanctum sanctorum by breaking its lock. They took away a golden eye fixed to the Shiva Lingam weighing around 65 grams and a golden chain with pendant shaped like serpent weighing eight grams that was placed on the Balimurthy placed near the Lingam.

The theft came to light on Monday morning. The value of stolen gold ornaments has been estimated at Rs 1.5 lac. A case about the theft was registered in the city (south) police station. The police have begun investigation.
