Taking advantage of the situation, a notorious thief belonging to Irani Gang escaped.

The CCB policemen had arrested Ali, a notorious member of Irani Gang relating to robbery at Pune. He was being brought to Bengaluru in an Innova car, when it hit a truck from behind near Oorukere near Tumakuru at around 7.30 am. Police constable, Jabiulla, who was driving the vehicle and inspector, Anand Khabari, suffered serious injuries. The thief, Ali, who was seated in the backseat, got down and fled from the accident scene when the other policemen were busy attending to injured colleagues.

Police inspector, K C Giri and constables, Satish and Mahadaeva and driver, Chetan, who were also travelling in the ill-fated vehicle, escaped unhurt.

Injured Anand and Jabiulla were admitted into the district hospital. Because of serious injuries, Anand was shifted to NIMHANS Bengaluru, whereas Jabiulla was admitted into Colombia Asia Hospital.

The CCB team, which had verified CCTV footage of a robbery within Sanjaynagar police station limits at Bengaluru, had gone to Pune on July 19 after getting reliable information about a thief matching the features present there. The team took him into custody on Wednesday and began the journey at 6 pm the same day.

As Innova driver, Chetan, had driven the vehicle for two days continuously, he was tired. Therefore, Jabiulla had taken over driving at Hiriyoor, it is learnt. In the accident, the car was badly mangled. Central zone inspector general of police, Seemant Kumar Singh, crime branch deputy commissioner of police, Kaushalendra Kumar and district superintendent of police, Kartik Reddy, visited the spot.
