Kiran Bedi to Quit Police Force - Sidelined for Promotion?

Agency reports

New Delhi, Nov 26: Being country's first woman  IPS officer, Kiran Bedi, now wants to quit the police force.

Bedi who is currently the DG for Bureau of police research and development put in her papers to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). There is a mandatory of 90 days in which the MHA is to decide on Bedi's resignation.

Bedi says that she is quitting because she wants to pursue her academic, social  interests. Bedi said that she wants time for herself and that is why she wants to quit the post. Interestingly, the last time Bedi was in the news was when she made her disillusionment public over being sidelined for the post of Delhi Police Commissioner.

India's first woman police officer, seen as a symbol of empowerment in a male-dominated society, said on Tuesday she was quitting, months after a junior male colleague was chosen ahead of her for a top job.

Kiran Bedi, known as a tough, no-nonsense officer who spoke her mind, said she had applied for voluntary retirement two years ahead of schedule, to pursue academic and social interests.

At the time Bedi lashed out at the government saying she may have been overlooked because, as a woman, she did not have "booze friends", arguing appointments were being made on how good officers were at "networking".

On Tuesday though, she said the time had come to "move on".

"I want to focus on my academic, spiritual and social interests more," Bedi told reporters. "My 35 years of service has been totally fulfilling."

There was no immediate comment from the federal Home Ministry on her request for early retirement.

One of India's most recognized faces, Bedi has a larger-than-life image in a country where police are mostly perceived as inefficient or corrupt or both.

Simple question first. Do our heartfelt remarks, reach the Personnel in the Government and in Newspapers. This is like, killing an animal, a very long sentence and being drunk and killing over half-a-dozen people, you get an easy sentence. This is our Politics. Wish we all had Godfathers in the ruling front. Congrats Mrs. Bedi on your courage as you did the right thing.

Dr. Kiran Bedi, IPS has been the epitome of courage, integrity and dedication to duty, to many a common man, amongst the vast multitudes of Indians both in India and abroad because these people choose to see in her, a symbol of emancipation from the shackles of the debased system. What exemplified her personality was her steadfast resilience in the face of adversity, the will and the conviction to believe in oneself to uphold the law of the land without any discrimination. While these attributes made her amply worthy of emulation, many of her own colleagues grudgingly subscribed to this view, if only for the reason that such adulation never came their way.

It needs to be known that there are very many such dedicated officers, both men and women with such admirable traits, who do their uniform proud, but they are hardly known because the media has no time to give them their due. While it is definitely not justified to vilify Mr. Y S Dadwal, two years her junior who superseded her as the Commissioner of Police of Delhi , it is a sad reflection that the system has forced someone, even of the stature of Dr. Kiran Bedi to give up the fight and to move on with her life. This can be a mortifying blow to the morale of the common man who see in the likes of Dr.Kiran Bedi, their aspirations to stand up to the might of the system and fight against the injustice meted out to them.

While Dr. Kiran Bedi will not fade away into the oblivion even if she chooses to retire prematurely, I feel she should fight this last battle with all the gumption and fortitude that she is known for. God and the Country be with you. We will always be proud of you.

It is unfortunate that one of the most respected, efficient and innovative police officer, Dr. Kiran Bedi had to seek voluntary retirement from the service three years prior to her official retirement age. Though she has cited personal reason for her request to be relieved, the obvious reason cannot be hidden from the public. The fact that Y S Dadwal, who is two years junior superseded her as the Commissioner of Police of Delhi following the retirement K.K Paul in July 2007, had disillusioned Kiran Bedi.

It is ironic that when Mrs. Pratibha Patil was sworn in as the first woman President of the country, the first IPS officer, Kiran Bedi was denied her rightful place as the Police Commissioner of the Capital of the country. In an interview Kiran Bedi had remarked that there was the political force behind Mrs. Pratibha Patil in making her the President of India, and in the same breath she continued that equally there was a political force behind her (Kiran Bedi) not being considered for the post of the Police Commissioner of Delhi.

It is a belief and fact that the political class would not like to see an honest, non-corrupt, efficient and popular police officer to be at the helms of the law and order affairs of the capital of India. These politicians were apprehensive that Kiran Bedi as the police chief of Delhi, their nefarious activities would be strictly under scrutiny and they would not be able to interfere in the police department. When an upright police officer of the stature of Kiran Bedi has to undergo the humiliation of being denied the right of promotion, we can imagine how the entire system works to the detriment of honest officers. While the nation expressed its jubilation over the empowerment of women when Mrs. Pratibha Patil was elevated to the position of the President of India, a deserving and dedicated police officer, Kiran Bedi is being denied her rightful place as the Delhi Police Commissioner. This forces one to think whether the slogan of empowerment of women is a reality or a mere myth.

Kiran Bedi is one of the first IPS officer India produced since Independence. One of the most daring and able officer of the Indian elite police force, the Government has failed to recognize her talent, ability, and her services by not considering her services and sidelining her for the top Police post in Delhi Police Commisionarate. She was isolated due to her honesty, her diligence towards her duty and not succumbing to any political pressures.

She is one of the able officer who could have decorated a highest level of the Police force. Highly qualified and highly competitive among other officers of the elite Police force, she was sidelined by the political pressures as the Government itself saw her as a threat, with a fear that all their political tactics and vendetta would be made public by her honest and sincere nature.

As an avid admirer of Mrs. Bedi and her works, I would only say that, at last better sense has prevailed on her, who was superseded for the post of Commissioner of Delhi Police. Having sensed her bleak future in the Police service in view of her suppression, her action of quitting the service honorably is appreciable. Best of luck to Kiran Bedi in her academic and social pursuits in her life. I am sure a lot of people will benefit from you.

Hats Off to you Ms kiran Bedi. This is the right way to protest. Our politicians do not respect a just officer. They want their Chamcha's (servants) to be in higher posts, who do the actions they (politicians) dictate. Move on and God Bless you.
