Mangaluru, Aug 11: "Alongside roti, kapda and makaan, bandwidth has become a necessary entity of modern times," said E Vasanth, former deputy director of ISAC-ISRO.

He delivered the inaugural address at the inauguration of the fourth edition of the two day National Conference on Advances in Communication and Signal Processing (NCACSP-2016) organised on the premises of St Joseph Engineering College on Thursday August 11.

In his address he said, "Electronics over the years has evolved drastically. In the past, we used to work with vacuum tubes. Now you guys work with chips right from the initial stages of learning. Hence, along with roti, kapda and makaan, bandwidth has become a necessary entity."

"Every country is working towards maximum usage of bandwidth in the modern era. At present, countries are using a bandwidth of 60 GB/sec for satellite communication. ISRO too is not far behind. It will soon launch a satellite to enable communication in the bandwidth of 10 GB/sec."

"Theory and practice are the two sides of knowledge. As they are changing drastically we need to keep updating ourselves. Hence, national conferences like these play a vital role in enhancing one's knowledge," he added.

Vasanth later released a newsletter of the proceedings of the national conference.

While delivering the presidential address, the director in-charge, Fr Rohith D'Costa said, "Decisiveness in electronics has shaped our destiny. Along with this, engineers have made fruitful discoveries in electronics which are made accessible to the common man. The perspectives, priorities and choices we make drive us to where we want to be in life."

Speaking on the occasion the principal of the college Dr Joseph Gonsalves said, "Unless we indigenize technology we can not access its fruits. The roles played by satellites in communication and development in the various fields of our country are remarkable. India may be a developing country but it has wealth of knowledge. Instead of contributing towards growth of private firms of some other country, the engineer must render his services to our motherland."

HOD of the department of E&C engineering, Dr Saritha H M welcomed the gathering while convenor Dr Bini A A rendered the vote of thanks.

Assistant professors of the department of E&C engineering, Viola Pinto and Reema Quadras compered the programme.

Vice principal of the college Rio D'Souza, co-convenor of the programme, Shama B N and others were present at the occasion.
