Mangaluru: Meeting Mother Teresa – An unforgettable memory

By Concepta Fernandes Alva

Mangaluru, Sep 3: The entire world eagerly awaits the canonization of Mother Teresa as a Saint on September 4 in Vatican, by Pope Francis. On the occasion, the words of the veteran communist leader Jyothi Basu, come to mind - “What is the necessity to declare Mother Teresa a saint now? She was a saint during her life time itself.” The former chief minister of West Bengal had witnessed the life and service of Mother Teresa from close quarters and could not be more right.

Mother Teresa has been long gone for 19 years. Yet her love for God and humanity and her service to the mankind live in the minds of people. I was blessed with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet her and crave her blessings. This incident is fresh in my mind till this day and it gives me goose bumps each time I reminisce it.

It was 1995, the month, August. Mother was in Mangaluru for about 6 days. She had arrived here to inaugurate the Missionaries of Charity House in the city. She was also scheduled to attend many other programmes. During one of those days, luck favoured me and I met Mother.

The pioneer institution in women’s education in coastal Karnataka, St Agnes College was celebrating their platinum jubilee year. A symposium was organized on various women-related topics. I was invited to deliver a talk on ‘The influence of radio in the betterment of women.’ I reached St Agnes convent to handover a copy of my lecture in advance to one of the organizers, Sr Regia. It was around 12:15 in the noon, I recall. It was brought to my notice that Mother Teresa, was in the college auditorium addressing the students there. Suddenly I had a rush of desire to meet Mother.

I asked Sr Regia, whom I knew well for quite some time if the public was allowed to meet the Mother. 'I have heard of and read about her so much that I would like to meet her and crave her blessings’ I requested . On this Sr. Regia smiled. She said, ‘Don’t you worry about the public audience. You don’t need to wait for long to see the Mother. Our Sisters will be bringing her to the convent for lunch in a short while now. On her way from the auditorium she will come to the chapel. Come with me’. With this she entered the chapel. I could not believe my ears. I was completely excited and thrilled at the prospect of meeting Mother. I followed Sr Regia to the chapel and knelt down at the place she suggested I kneel. Within a few minutes Mother entered the chapel with two other sisters. I approached her and craved her blessings. She kept her hands on my head and whispered ‘May God bless you my child’. Then she took out a medal of mother Mary from the small blue cloth pouch in her hand and gave it to me. My son, of two years of age then, had adorned that medal around his neck for many years. I am certain that my daughter who was in my womb at the time received blessings from Mother too.

From the moment of my first meeting with the living saint, I felt my association with her grow stronger and it continues to be. I was disheartened on her demise on 5 September, 1997. On 19 October, 2003, the Holy Father beatified Mother Teresa. The diocese of Mangalore had celebrated this event with a splendid function in Mangaluru under the leadership of Fr John Fernandes, the then chairman of the ‘chair in Christianity’ under Mangalore University. There was a great line up of events presented by various groups, without the barrier of religion, caste, creed or language. It was my privilege to compere that programme. I would consider this as the continued blessings from Mother.

Though I have compered several high profile stage programmes prior to that and afterwards in Mangaluru and elsewhere, Mothers’ beatification commemoration programme remains the most special and rewarding function till date.

In October 2010, my husband, children and I travelled to the North Eastern states of the country for a vacation. We stayed in Kolkata for 3 days. We paid a visit to Mother Teresa’s house there. We entered through the door on which was written, 54 A MOTHER TERESA, MC IN and prayed in front of the place where she lay interred and a monument where Mother attends to a child. This visit to the house of Mother Teresa where she lived and where she has been laid to rest is also a memorable one. We are planning yet another visit to Kolkata and to Mother Teresa’s house. God willing, it will happen within 4 weeks after her canonization.

Glory and praises be to Mother Teresa who served the children of God and who dedicated her life to the love of God.

Good article. I had a great opportunity to see her at Fr Mullars hospital campus on 15 Th August 1995 as well as Bendur church hall. I had to travel to Bombay the following day the 16 Th August by Indian airlines flight and for my surprise Mother Theresa too was flying in the same flight to Bombay and had a golden opportunity to get her autograph saying God Bless you with her signature and my memories are she refused her breakfast in the flight saying that please pack it and give me as I need it to my poor people in Bombay where she was visiting , but the crew requested her to have the breakfast and she will pack enough quality of snacks ( flight was almost empty being the holidays ) and while disembarking the Indian airlines crew gave a large parcel of food pack as mother desired . Indian airlines was her official carrier and was carting her free .

Blessed Mother Theresa had treasured fond affection for Mangalore hence she visited our home more often than many other cities of India. She admired our Leprosy Asylum at Fr. Mullers and she also witnessed all the good work that the priests and nuns have been doing in and around Mangalore.

Perhaps Mangalore was the last palce she visited before God took her away. She was anxiously awaiting her visa for China, and when the Visa never came, she availed of the kind invitation of Sr. Olivia of St. Agnes and came to Mangalore with an unannounced visit. Sr. Olivia perhaps is the most privileged person who will be blessed by Saint Mother Theresa in a special way, because to the best of my knowledge, when Mother Theresa visited Mangalore she stayed at St. Agnes and she asked Sr. Oliva to give her a small space in her bedroom where she slept perhaps on he floor. These are the precious memories that Saint Mother Theresa has left behind in Mangalore that we as people shall always cherish with a grateful heart.

Thank you, Sr. Oliva, for your magnanimous heart for Saint Mother Theresa. She will take good care of you in your life, hence please share some of your gifts to us all poor sinners.

Contd:- When the sisters totaled the amount received in their old used adding machine, it was exactly Rs. 450000.00

One fairly rich woman got the car. She contacted her son studying abroad and he said that he is not interested in gas hustling American car.

The winner came to meet Mother Teresa with a smile and said " since my son doesn't like the car, I sold the car, I have kept half of the selling price for my son". " And the rest? Mother asked her. Answer came " the rest I will donate back to the Missionaries of Charity", the total amount was exactly Rs. 500000.00. Is this coincidental or a miracle? Sister Francis Xavier was assigned with the job of the construction.

Father Le Joly of Australia was closely working with Mother Teresa and he used to express fear and doubt about the funding of various projects. This reply to Fr. Le Joly has greatly touched me very personally.

" GOD IS MY BANKER", " MONEY ....I NEVER THINK OF IT. IT ALWAYS COMES. THE LORD SENDS IT. WE DO HIS WORK HE PROVIDES THE MEANS. IF HE DOES NOT GIVE US THE MEANS, THAT SHOWS HE DOES NOT WANT THE WORK, SO WHY WORRY"?

A LIFE OF TOTAL TRUST AND FAITH.

Among the great humanitarians of history, George Muller of Bristol, England, and Mother Teresa are very special in their total faith in God to supply the vast needs.

The chief of the dining department told George Muller one night that there is no milk for tomorrow. He told him, simply put the plates and the Lord will provide. As usual George Muller began to pray earnestly. Early in the morning, there was a knock at the door the local milk truck delivery person told the person in charge of the food, our milk truck's axil is broken-we are going to pour the milk to the culvert. Do you need milk? They got more milk than they were needed.

Mother Teresa's used to go to the Hindus-Muslims and Christians and told them " I have come to give you a chance to do something beautiful to GOD". She had a lot of patience in life, and after each patient waiting, the supply was doubled.

Sister Francis Xavier who was a doctor, joined the Missionaries of Charity in 1951 from Agra called her in 1952 very urgently needed Rs. 50000.00 to start a Children's Home. Mother Teresa replied, it is impossible. A few minutes later, the telephone rang a call from the Editor of a News Paper in Manila telling that the Government of Philippine has just awarded her the " Magsaysay Prize" which was exactly Fifty thousand Rs.

Mother was in need of Rs. 500000.00 for Shanti Nagar in Calcutta.

When Pope Paul VI visited Mumbai in December 1964, he traveled in the custom-made Lincoln convertible donated by some wealthy person in the U.S. At the farewell address, the Pope praised the work of Mother Teresa and donated the car to her.

In the picture, I have seen her in van and Ambassador car. She thought that through selling the Continental, she may get Rs. 500000.00 but the best offer was only Rs. 90000.00.

She got the divine idea. Those who donated Rs. 100.00 or more got a numbered receipt, and one name was drawn out of that and that person will get the car.

This article took me back to the time when I had first seen Mother Teresa way back to 1965 or so .
A part of my KG class bldg at St Xavier's Vile Parle, Mumbai was converted to a home where Aged,Infirm and Dying People were tended n looked after by Mother Teresa and her band of selfless Sisters and so we would always see her and her sisters .She would drive around in a Blue Striped Volkswagen Van.
We children then barely 8 to 10 years old would be fascinated at the sight of a Lady"Foreigner and that too driving a Van !. She would always be smiling as she would go around .
Subsequently used to meet Mother quite often whenever she would Travel by Indian Airlines(now Airindia).
(some years later Indian airlines/Airindia had given her a life Time Free Travel for her n a Companion, for Travel on its network )
Must Admit I Always felt the Aura around her.
Later on one of her visits to Mangalore when I met her at the Mangalore airport VIP Room, I did remind her of having seen her in the 60's at My School and she gave a big smile and blessed me and my family.
What a Great Soul and how Blessed n fortunate are we All to have had such a Noble soul amongst our midst.

Mother Teresa continue to Bless us All.

Great article. It is very hard to find a true Christ-bearer like Mother Teresa in the recent history.

While she was visiting the country of Yemen, she was staying with my uncle Dr. M. M. Ninan (brother of late Dr. M. M. Thomas, former Governor of Nagaland). When Mother Teresa visited Chennai, my close friend John Britto met her and got the blessings. She got medical care in Chennai and I saw her picture with my relative who along with other doctors gave her medical care.

These three people had the same report that they felt the presence of GOD in her company. When Dr. Billy Graham visited her in 1972 along with the U.S. Consul in Calcutta, he said the very thing about the different surrounding of GOD's presence.

Mother Teresa has shown to the Christians and the no-Christians of the whole world about the living GOD of love through practical way. Her life must be a great challenge to every person bearing a Christian name around the world to be a real Christ-bearer.

I fully agree with this article. I was studying in St. Agnes and was on 1st year PUC. Mother had come to the St Agnes Special school which is right opposite to the college. WE were told not to go close to her and the police and security personnel were around her. Yesterday I was sharing this experience with my family. Though the security was not allowing her to mingle she calmed them down saying do not worry I am OK. She was so soft in her voice. I could touch her hand which is as good as fur or cotton. I can still feel that within me. Thank you mother for allowing me to touch you. May the divine mercy protect all of us and flow within the world to make it pure, humble and loving one another. Blessed mother be always our guide.

No Matter What The Devils In India Say She's A Mother And A Saint.
A woman who needs very less introduction was an Albanian missionary who devoted her life to help people. She spread the message of love, humanity and peace to the world. She is considered the most influential person and her life itself is the messages for the billions of us.
Some Of Her Best N Truthful Messages To The World Torn With Religious beliefs. Humanity Was Her First Priority..
    ........
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives: Be kind anyway.
If you are successful you will win some false friends and true enemies: Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank people will try to cheat you: Be honest anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight: Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous of you: Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten by tomorrow: Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough: Give your best anyway.

I totally agree with you Henry. Mother Theresa is already more than a saint for common people like me.

Many might differ, but i feel Vatican should have canonized her much earlier for her noble, charitable, humanitarian work rather than waiting for confirmations on the miracles.
A lady born in Europe coming to India, dedicating her entire life serving the people in Kolkata itself is a miracle.

    Shankarji: Do agree with you.

She got Padmashree Award from India in 1962 announced by the Prime Minister Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first ever given to a person of foreign birth. We all must be very thankful to the Nehru Family for their special care and respect for Mother Teresa. Also the Communist Government gave her all the motivation in her saintly service for the helpless people. But it is too horrifying, how the VHP-RSS are throwing cow dung upon this saintly person honored and respected all over the world.

    Shankar Anna,

Very nice comment, well said and highly appreciated.

There are hundreds ( may be thoushands, I do not know exact number) of missionaries from Europe who spent their entire life in India who spent time on education and medical assistance to poor and lowest of low in the society. in early 70s there were three Eurpoean Jesuit priests in St Alosius high school, one of them taught music, who were so loving and affectionate to all students.

Mother Teresa, we pray to you to bless all humanity showered with peace and love.
