Mangaluru: Malicious propaganda by anti-culture minds - St Aloysius PU College

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 7: Reacting to various reports making the rounds in the media about restrictions imposed by the college on its students, principal of St Aloysius PU College in the city, Fr Melwin Mendonca SJ, has clarified that the college has not forced upon the students any anti-student rules and regulations.

In a release, he said that the college has been imparting value-based education to student community. "In the larger interests of the student community, and as per the suggestions put forth by the parents and guardians, some rules were implemented for better discipline. A women's forum to check conduct of girl students has been formed through which girl student are imparted knowleldge about these things.

But in the recent past, some anti-culture minds, by misunderstanding the above things, have been making efforts to sully the image of the college, a development about which the college is disturbed. Our educational institution has been working to preserve culture, the principal said in a release.

I think that a lot of alumni and parents are confused over what we are fighting for. First, a disclaimer: this is not an operation by RSS/BJP or any other right wing party and there is no malicious agenda. This is a fight started by alumni of Aloysius itself.
Why are we fighting? We are publicizing this issue not because we hate the college or because we have a grudge against it. We care about Aloysius, where we spend many good years and we don't want to see it succumb to ignorance and regressive attitudes.
What problem do we have with the rules exactly? If other alumni remember, when we studied in Aloysius, we did not have such restrictions like 'a single girl should not be found with a group of boys'. I cannot understand why many people are supporting such rules. How would you have felt about such rules if they were imposed while you were a student? I can understand that as parent you may wish to protect your child from everything. But that is neither possible nor desirable. Your child must face their own problems, maybe make some mistakes in between, but eventually they will grow to be stronger adults. The more rules you impose, the more teenagers will rebel (without you knowing about it) and the less they will be able to form healthy relationships with the opposite sex.
Considering the present climate in the country where politicians and others are talking about 'protecting indian culture' by restricting women, we definitely expected more from our alma mater.

I find the entire episode very silly.

I am an alumni of St.Josephs Arts and Science College, Bangalore. passed out in 1979. Those days a few of our lecturers would come shoffer driven to college. One of them was my History lecturer Mr.Mathew, a keralite but born and brought up in Bangalore. His family owned a big rubber plantation in Kottayam, Kerala. He loved teaching. During interval a few lecturers incl. Mr.Mathews would come along with the students ( a few females too ). We would sit in the canteen together and order some stuff like samosas, tea, coffee etc. Many a times the lecturers would offer the students cigarettes and even pay the bill and vise versa. It was so nice and healthy. We would discuss various issues starting from our studies to movies and new restaurants in town. The lecturers would sometimes invite a few students to their home for dinner and introduce us to their family. I'm surprised that this does not happen in Mangalore. The mentality here probably is different.

This is a very disappointing response At a time where we have thousands of people all over the country claiming to be protectors of our 'culture' and committing acts of violence in its name. What does the principal mean by this vague statement?
I was hoping that Aloysius would either craft a carefully worded rebuttal of the issue or accept that mistakes had been made and that changes were in the offing. This senseless name calling shows the administration in poor light.

St.Aloysius College should be henceforth careful while admitting students from other institutions. The interview must be rigorous in par with other top institutions. Just going by high marks is insufficient. Many students are mere book worms and without commonsense.

here was a student who studied by heart for months and revising it further 1plus1 cow = Answer 2 cows. In the exam the question was 2plus2 horses = ? This student left the question because he studied only 1plus1 cow = 2. This is the irony.

For many students the College campus has become a ramp for a fashion show.

St Aloysius College should have a written exam and 2 rounds of personal interview for admission. Just going by the high marks is insufficient. Many of them lack common sense, discipline, moral values etc.

I suggest the Institution inducts the admission pattern of XLRI Jamshedpur or IIM. If not a few refraps too will smuggle their way in. A good recommendation from a worthy local personality and known to the Principal too should be included.

    1. Why do you want to attend this College ?

    2. What book have you read in the last year that has special meaning to you and why ?

    3. How will you contribute to the campus and institution ?

4 What are your academic interests ?

Such minute description of rules for women students makes a mockery of education. Education is growing in freedom. Children should learn how to dress decently and they should decided what is decent. Anyway college has a uniform. All minute details about dress makes mockery of formation. It is all imposition. It cannot be worse than this anymore for a decent institution. We do not trust students anymore. That is tragic

Any student who is not happy with this institution should leave it. Simple. The institution has its rules. There are rules about how you behave in a temple, in a mosque, in a church, in a classroom, in a restaurant, in a hostel, etc...
Same in this institution or ANY other institution. If you don't like that you are free to leave.
By the way I am an alumni of this institution and proud of it.

I thought Aloysius as a best institution till I went to Western countries and saw the education system there. May be principal and other students have never gone beyond Aloysius, so they do not know what quality and value based education means. Can you imagine Harvard, Stanford, London School of Economics etc implementing these kind of rules? There is a reason for them being in Ivy League. Comparing Aloysius to those institutions will be as good as comparing Lionnel Messi with a Soccer player representing Aloysius college team. However, instead of focusing on these rules, why can't principal send some of his staff for international tour where they can study some best practices in those top institutions and implement them in Aloysius.

I think Mr. Gokul is right. Although I too studied in SAC and am grateful for that, I must admit looking back at my tenure was not so enjoyable as much as it should have been.

It is quite normal now that ex-students will jump to defend their college. But let us understand the frustration of the students in changing times. I do not believe college is all about academics. I think it is also about socializing, chatting, sports and many other extra curricular activities. This is the only time in your life where you can enjoy the most and must make use of it.

Many of the students are eager to come out of 10th and go to college thinking finally they will be more independent than they used to be. But when you find dictator kind of attitude from the principal and lecturers that are sometimes so old fashioned and disconnected with the students then depression sets among students.

Discipline is important but should not be taken too far. Too much focus on academics will produce robots instead of humans. There should be a balance between discipline and fun. Very rarely you see teachers that are popular with students. Good teachers are compassionate, jovial and reach out to students of various types. Mahatma Gandhi too led a disciplined life it was said but never expected his disciples to emulate him as he knew very well it would be extreme to match his lifestyle.

The educational institutions are in the news of late with a lot of negative information. For the sake of our children and our nation there is an urgent need to separate these institutions from the political parties. The leaders of e main national parties namely congress BJP and Communists should leave the students alone. The leadership qualities must be ingrained into these youngsters but the process is not through political parties. Do not wait for the government to take a step here. I think we parents have a greater role in moulding our children and not allowing them to take part in the political activities during their student life. This in fact applies to all facets of life including religion. Students should learn everything but taking part in politics and religious matters is a dangerous sign.

In today's digital age, it is imperative that organizations address crises as soon as possible. The longer we wait, the more can things get out of hand. I believe that this situation wouldn't have arisen if the concerned persons had acted faster and better. This issue must surely be taken up as a lesson on crisis management and must be clearly studied, so that something of this kind is not repeated. It's great if organizations have a responsive presence on digital media and not treat it as a platform for press releases. All the best to the institution for the future.

St. Aloysius PU College has been the pioneer in giving students the best academic inputs, facilities for sports as well as extra-curricular activities, keeping their all-round development in mind.

Most importantly, they have grounded their students with the highest moral values, as is evident from their highly accomplished (in all fields) ex-students, who are leaders in their respective fields.

I'm sure 100% of them (including me) will vouch for the correctness of their administrative policies. These are for the all-round development of their students into "world-class citizens".

Those who are not comfortable with the regulations in force (which are framed with the best interests of the wards in mind) are certainly free to shift to other colleges (there are any number of PU Colleges in Mangaluru), without the necessity of resorting to cheap tactics to tarnish the image of this great, world-renowned educational institution.

One thing can be noticed here, The administration might not have brought these new rules unless observing the students. Unfortunately there was couple of incidents in srinivas college and bellare college. Let the rules be implemented there too. Let all students maintain uniform dress code. Keep your personal behavior(relevant to SAC) and religion(relevant to other two cases)out of college compound. This is what i advise to the students. Heya Students,

I am an Ex student passed out in 2003, and during that time we also had a few set of rules for us guys and girls as well though it was not given in printing.
We were held responsible for our bad behavior and enjoyed freedom and appreciation for our achievements. At that point in time being young hot blood we dint make an effort of understanding certain rules which we felt was against us. But then the college took a stand which later entering into real life it made sense as those disciplinary measures have been able to protect me outside the campus. Like decent formal dressing was a habit which I have followed since PUC till now which is important to know as there is a thin difference between decent and flashy. Like we wanted to wear shorts(which would be below our knees), Sleeveless T-Shirts, Studd. But were stopped with no explanation. The reason was discipline. And yes it has helped. There are various other examples which I realized only after entering the corporate world. It made life easy to adjust and focus on the challenges ahead because of the discipline in school (Milagres) and PUC till graduation (St. Aloysius).
My Message to students (if the rules as mentioned in the blog are True),

Dear Students, Kindly do not take the rules so seriously as your priority is knowledge more than a degree. Focus on the opportunity to learn in this institution.
Each student would have had an incident with their teacher and lecturer (Fact). But to shame them and their noble profession on social media is not cool. Try to do that with your manager and you will learn the hard way. You have a lot more opportunities to learn than what we available to us.
The institution is there to stay an maybe 1% would remain to join the faculty. For the rest you have a long way to go in life. All the best students.
Do not make a mountain out of a molehill
Do not make a national issue out this institution instead achieve something and be proud of it.

    Regards
    Aloysian

    Lydia,
just take the meaning of the phrase and not the word 'cross' from my comment below.

You are the one who mostly stand for women's right to wear anything. But when a Christian institution goes obviously against your ideology, you back them just because you are a Christian.
I will call a spade a spade even if there is an 'Om' on it.

Hope this neutralizes my earlier comment!

I have replied to your every query and I left out the word 'cross' deliberately. I have no need to ask you the reason for its usage because for me its an educational institute, not a Christian institute.

Trust me to be neutral on all pertinent cases. I.e. I've asked Sudhakar to copy/paste my comment in Sullia episode because I quite well remember my stand there.

As I write these comments a myriad thoughts flash across my mind. Nostalgic memories of my beloved Alma Mater, St. Aloysius School and College where I had my entire education. The best gift ONE CAN GIVE ANOTHER is the gift of education and this what we have received at the hands of The Jesuit Fathers of sacred memory.

Instead of getting involved in anti-social activities it expedient that the students concentrate on their studies and come out as proud Aloysians wearing the Aloysian stamps.

As I write these comments I recall with nostalgia memories of my mentors - Father Ignatius Fernandes, Father Joe Sequeira, Father George Albuquerque, Mr. Albert Gonsalves, Mr. Pandurag Pai, Mr. Holla, Mr. Pai and others who carved me out of raw stone. I repeat that my success in life is entirely due to the education that I received at the hands of Aloysian teachers.

For those girls, who so wish to flash their nails or may be even extra skin than required or pout their lips, may be should quit going to collage and begin to walk the ramp. They would, most likely be more appreciated, there than waste a seat of learning going to a deserving candidate. Decorum needs to be maintained by either sex in an educational institution. I agree with you here Ma'am. St. Aloysius is not the only institute which has strict rules. St. Agnes where I studied for 5 years has similar rules even though it is All Girls college. Even the major IT companies have rules and regulations for dressing, office romance, unprofessional behaviour and any kind of violation of these policies will result in termination of job. I have read the article which is circulating in social media. Just felt like laughing... these rules are nothing when you face the real world.

    Shankar,

Out of 24 hours in a day, in college students spend approx 6 hours at the institution. They have remaining 18 hours to apply lipstick, nail polish, hair colour, henna and all. Please do not make education institutions a competition ground to promote these fashion methods because it deviates students' minds from studies. It also further shrinks those less affluent ones who cannot afford such luxuries.

Formal sex education is existing in present curriculum. Please parents, you too take some initiative to spell out the generalised terms to your son/daughter - don't expect the teachers/lecturers to explain your child how/when to make lxxx ! There are subject of much priority that sex to lean during college days !

Those who have objection to the disciplinary rules imposed by the institution, should go and study in fish/vegetable markets, not in reputed institutions like SAC. Its not a child's play to run a college of its reputation fighting against all odds and yet maintaining the esteem. SAC's bold move is to change to Co-ed thus giving growing students, an opportunity to learn to relax while mingling with the opposite gender. Those who studied in boys/girls schools/colleges will understand what I am trying to explain because it took them quite some time to be comfortable with their counterpart once they start working.

If students/parents have any objections to the rules and regulations, please seek TC. Because tomorrow if your ward elopes or commits suicide due to very change that you are asking for, you will still blame the institution.

Our very human nature is to react the first thing we hear something we are not ready to hear or face ,especially when it comes from our loved ones or something we are attached to, Everyone reacted including me, we did enough damage to ourselves by publishing information that was not authenticated, and then some people took undue advantage and made it a national news.
A few sat back and analyzed the situation and understood that a piece of information that is floating around was something that was not authenticated. ...and when it became national news for no good reason, that is when we decided to step up and convey the true spirit of an Aloysian.
My association with St.Aloysius at least for the last 3 years has been so wonderful, I was always welcomed by Fr.Melwin Mendonca -Principal, He gave me an opportunity to conduct Career Guidance for II PUC students of the college, It was indeed a great experience to interact with Gen Y student population...Very Bright, Intelligent, Career planned, Curious...That made me think then, What a Smart lot....as they were mostly well informed and the Boy Girl interaction was so healthy, and Boys to girl ratio increased and there was no sign of any insecurity, and no girl students complained about rules or happenings in college that blocked their growth. I have counselled so many girl students, it was very clear to me they were looking for someone to help them channelize their thought process.
Being an educator, I strongly feel every institution must have rules and regulations for the smooth functioning of day to day activities, It is not a joke to handle a large student population coming to study at Aloysius, not all are in the right spirit especially those who studied in all boys or all girls high school ,and I am bet sure that SAC is well equipped to handle this.
I only request the policy makers to encourage healthy interaction among boys and girls is as a rule and stay liberal that will encourage students to grow as individuals.

If there is any misbehavior reported of the students, it is the duty of parents to take care of their kids. Parents are first teacher of their child. We cannot blame the place of education for any personal desires. Place of education should not be taken for granted. The new generation requires a lot of attention and guidance from parents.
