Mangaluru, Sep 9: Konkani writers and artistes association (KWAA) held a press meet here at press club on Friday September 9 and warned about John Monis who allegedly faked the masthead of Konkani monthly magazine 'Dirvem'.

Addressing the media persons, William Pais, author of 'Land Called South Canara', informed that the sub-divisional magistrate of Mangaluru has recently passed an order cancelling the title declaration of Mangaluru based Konkani paper ‘Dirvem’ for violating PRE Act and journalistic ethics.

Briefing more on the issue, he said, “John A Monis hailing from Madyanthar had given false information to the authorities regarding the place of publication of his paper and also about his experience in journalism. He had also faked the masthead of the original ‘Dirvem’, the first Konkani newspaper published from Mangaluru. This original ‘Dirvem’ was in circulation for almost 40 years before Independence and Monis was projecting his paper as the original ‘Dirvem’ which enjoys lot of goodwill.”

Florine Roche, general secretary of KWAA said, “The title was obtained by unlawful means by John A Monis. He was misusing the paper for character assassination and slander of Konkani writers and artistes. He was also swindling money from innocent people and used to blackmail them saying he would write about them whenever they asked him to return their money.”

“In March 2015, a complaint was lodged with the District Commissioner of Mangaluru by 26 Konkani writers and artistes against John Monis. KWAA had complained to the Assistant Commissioner and also to the postal department following which the postal department had cancelled the special concession given to ‘Dirvem’.

“The Assistant Commissioner after conducting a thorough inquiry in this matter passed order cancelling the declaration submitted by John A Monis in June this year. The DC who dealt with the charges of character assassination and slander of Konkani writers and artistes made in the said complaint, in his recent order passed almost 15 months of the complaint, castigated 'Dirvem' for not following journalistic morals and has clearly said the paper was practicing 'yellow journalism'.”

“The DC in his order had directed John A Monis to publish the order issued by him in his paper in the same font size within a month of passing the order. Despite cancellation of title of his paper, John A Monis continues to publish the paper violating the sub divisional magistrate's order and has even failed to comply with DC's order which is a grave offence.”

“The main objective of this press conference is to inform that even now John A Monis is collecting subscription for his paper forcibly from innocent people by sending youth to their homes. He also pressurizes people to pay donations for his paper. We have registered a police complaint regarding his blackmailing tactics. We request the general public not to fall prey to this man's plotting,” added Florine Roche.

President of KWAA Ronald Sequeira and Wilson Kateel were present in the press meet.

Dear Edmond do whatever you want. But follow the rule. Submitting false affidavit, character assassination, blackmail etc are not needed. Not much qualification is needed to understand all this. Just we need to open our eyes!!!

Those who want to defend the indefensible will find so many ways to do so. License of Dirvem was cancelled by the administrative machinery after following due procedure for over a period of almost 15 months. The reasons for cancellation were many and one of the reasons is for furnishing a ‘false’ certificate saying John Moniz had worked for Kanik Konkani paper for three years. If qualification is not a criterion what compelled John Moniz to produce a false certificate to the authorities for obtaining license for his paper. As for the ‘rights’ it is better approach the concerned authorities and seek answers from them. Moreover there is a reference in the comment to the so called ‘journalists’ in the report. What warranted that reference there?

I have studied only up to high school. And I am plumber by profession.
Do I need to ask anyone's verification or permission: to sing or dance or even to read my mother tongue Konkanni periodicals?
I believe no one will forbid me to read and write Konkani periodicals, because no one has the right to deny me of my love for my mother tongue.
Pls the so called 'journalists, commentators, critics, Konkani 'serving people' please advice me what I have to do and what I don't need to do.
I shall take your "free advice" with great value.

Regrettably if there is no yellow or black and white it is not called ad journalism now a days. In some stage or not society has experienced this malice trend from all corners of journalism without excuse. However, here not only dirvem but any such unhealthy journalism should be stopped before pointing out feet fingers on others. Honestly i do not blame anybody in particular but unethical practice of money minting journalism at any given stage.

Alphonse I agree with what you have pointed out. This should serve as a lesson to all those indulging in character assignation as well as those who patronize such kind of journalism. As you say, let good journalism prevail.

Dear Vincent, it is shocking that even after the Government order to cancel he is still publishing it which is in clear violence of Journalism. He deserves what he sow and put many innocent people to trouble and hardships. Now he reaps what he sow earlier. By profession an electrician how come suddenly become a journalist??? unless he had the hidden motives? I hope this clears your doubt. Let good journalism prevail. By the way what about Character Assassination of good writers?? Is it good journalism?? Think about it.

Mr Vincent justice already prevailed. Monis troubled many people. The government took right decision. Sad that there are people who support his yellow and 'below the belt' journalism.

JOHN MONIS took away sleep of many families of ALADNGADY in early 90's for taking money & not doing their electrical wiring job of their house. I personally went to his house along with my close relative from ALADNGADY to enquiry & backlash.

We were very much surprised, how come Mr. John, electrician by profession ventured into journalism !! Being junior in school and college, he never involved in type of social/Konkani cultural activities. That too, oldest paper like Dirvem, how he got into it without any credentials. As said, there is no shortcuts for success, and hope this episode will end soon.
