RSS triggers row by questioning legend behind Onam

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 11 (PTI) : As Keralites gear up to celebrate Onam, RSS has triggered a controversy by questioning the legend behind the festival, arguing that it marks the celebration of birth of 'Vamana' (incarnation of Lord Vishnu) and not the homecoming of demon king Mahabali.

An article published in the Onam special edition of RSS mouthpiece 'Kesari' claimed there was no reference in any mythological scriptures which supports the popular and widely circulated legend that ‘Vamana’ had sent Mahabali to the netherworld through deceit and the king visits the land annually to meet his subjects.

Countering the argument, senior CPI(M) leader and state Health Minister K K Shylaja said Onam was celebrated by all irrespective of caste, creed and religion and the attempt of the RSS was to bring back the bygone "upper class hegemony".

It was also a part of RSS's agenda to "hijack the festival", the minister alleged. According to the popular belief in the state, Mahabali’s homecoming in the Malayalam month of Chingam to see his subjects is celebrated as 'Thiru Onam' annually, which falls on September 14 this year.

However, the article written by K Unnikrishnan Namboothiri in the RSS magazine argued that Onam was originally celebrated as the birthday of Vamana and not a festivity to mark the homecoming of the demon king.

"There is no such reference or explanation anywhere in mythology or epics to support the story that Mahabali was pushed to the netherworld by Vamana and he visits the land every year to meet his subjects. Then, how did such a false story become prevalent in Kerala?" the article stated.

The write-up claimed that Lord Vishnu had actually "blessed" the demon king and not "punished" him by pushing into 'pathala' (netherworld).

"There is no indication in spiritual texts like 'Bhagavatham' or 'Narayaneeyam' or such other authentic books that Bali was pushed to the netherworld. Instead, such texts say that the noble king had emerged victorious in the trial by Vamana and he was blessed by the God," it said.

The writer also criticised the general picturisation of Mahabali as a man with moustache, potbelly and wearing an 'olakkuda' (traditional palm leaf umbrella).

"It is an attempt by some vested interest to distort the mythical stories and paint in poor light the characters of Hindu Puranas," the writer said, adding that such attempts to destroy Hinduism should be checked.

According to mythology, Onam is connected with ‘Asura’ (demon) king Mahabali, under whose reign everyone lived in happiness and equality.

Envious by his popularity, ‘Devas’ (Gods) sought the help of Lord Vishnu to get him banished into the netherworld.

But before going down, Mahabali secured a boon from Lord Vishnu to visit his subjects every year on the 'Thiru Onam' day.

The demon king's annual visit is celebrated by Keralites, who lay by their front yards with floral carpets, wear new clothes and prepare a sumptuous feast.

Onam is the only festival that is celebrated by all communities in Kerala and also by Keralites abroad with their friends from other parts of India. It is only that the Hindus attach it also to Mahabali which is fine for all. In 1961 Indian govt d Onam as the national feast of Kerala. RSS now want to divide the communities and also make it an Aryan only festival.

Kerala is known with all her negative certificates of crime-liquor consumption-con games etc, but greatly commended by the BJP politicians from north India about her religious harmony.

They are now specifically targeting a very popular Kerala State festival of all the religious people to destroy that. Some of my friends living in Trivandrum city are trying to sell their flats and trying to move northward because of the BJP/RSS growth in that area.

All the political parties of Kerala as a united front must stop this political force which is dedicated to destroy the State of Kerala. If the people of Kerala have greater interest to watch the Swamy's divine lectures as seen at the Haryana assembly, march behind this parade of pure insanity.

For a home or nations a prosperity, first and foremost there should be genuine unity among its members and citizens!
Thankfully, it's prevailing apparent from all religions celebrating Onam in Kerala.
For a true nationalist, true unity should be most important, not it's division!
None of the country in the universe, extremely concerned with religion ever prospered, because God did not create religion.

The north Indian imported ideology to the State of Kerala having the highest literacy will undermine the State with serious disharmony in the society. If the people of Kerala can't see this dangerous handwriting on the wall, I feel terribly sad about the future of the State where I was born.

The communist influence drove away the industrial expansion of the State, but the foreign remittance was the key economic player of the economy. Due to the oil price crash, that will be hurting. Along with the rubber price crash will create serious economic headwinds. Then to make the matters far worse, the RSS penetration which will pour more oil to the fire.

ONAM festival in kerala is celebrated as harvest festival by all, and it is a state festival. Now RSS wanted to divide the people in the name of festival stating that it is a hindu festival, with the idea of dividing the people. My friend stated in his comments CPM has banned the festival for kerala public employees. Please note govt. of kerala is restricted the celebration in govt. offices on duty hours. LET us not contradict ourselves the age long celebration of ONAM by all keralites irrespective of their religion and caste by eating tasty variety veg. food and sweets.

Dear friend, they want to divide the society in any way they can and to rule the blind followers. This Onam issue initiated by the RSS deities of Kerala will hurt, not only the Hindus but all religious faith thus they may get the sense to question this wayward political leaders brainwashed with the north India ideology of religious frictions.

The Onam day, they like to transform as " Yoga day of Kerala " and the savior of India Modiji will be flying to inaugurate that day.

Onam was a day of celebration and the fun of eating and enjoyment for everybody in the State. Trying to undermine that?

If you have problem with RSS, criticize it in most strong words. By connecting Nathuram Godse with RSS, you are making fool of yourselves because Nathram Godse was never a member of RSS, but he was member of Hindu Mahasabha.

By the way, RSS and Hindu Mahasabha are parallel organization like what we have "Shivasena and BJP" or "Congress and AAP".

It is as good as saying Kujlival belong to party of Pappu...

RSS, First you need to clarify few things for all of us. Onam is celebrated in Kerala just like we celebrate Bali Padyami during October. Onam is celebrated in September. Will it take a month for Bali to visit Karnataka from Kerala?? We celebrate dassara with worship for 9 nights (navarathri) as a mark that Devi killed Mahishasura after that 9 days. In Bengal Dassara is celebrated as Ravana's death by Durga (Sri Ram never comes to pic during Dassara) We celebrate Yugadi ( one is for upper caste and another for lower caste people) as our New Year. In North, it is the Diwali which is New Year and in TN, it is Pongal. Also there is Bihar and Bengali New years. Why we have to celebrate all death (Mahishasura, Ravana, Narakasura..etc..)instead of Birth. Is it because Aryans somehow found some way to degrade Dravids by making them bad people. RSS is bringing that Aryan superiority with everything. Explanation about this from RSS workers of this forum (they know it whom I am referring)is welcome.
