Cauvery row: Violence erupts in Bengaluru, 1 killed in firing

Bengaluru/Chennai, Sep 12 (PTI): One person was killed and another injured in police firing in Karnataka as the Cauvery water sharing row with Tamil Nadu turned violent today, escalating tensions between the two states.

Widespread violence erupted today in Bengaluru and some other parts of Karnataka, while sporadic trouble was witnessed in Tamil Nadu following Supreme Court's modified order on sharing Cauvery water by the two riparian states.

Police opened fire when a mob tried to attack a patrol vehicle at Hegganahalli in Rajagopal Nagar police limits as violence flared up in Bengaluru city with rampaging mobs setting fire to buses and trucks with Tamil Nadu registration plates.

"Two were brought with bullet injuries. One with bullet injury near the heart has died. The other is being operated for injury on right thigh," Dr. Giridhar, Managing Director of Lakshmi Multi-Speciality Hospital, where they were taken told PTI tonight.

Soon after the apex court gave its amended order, directing Karnataka to release 12000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu till September 20, violence and arson flared up in Bengaluru, with rampaging mobs setting afire at least 30 vehicles bearing Tamil Nadu number plates.

As violence broke out sending a wave of panic across Bengaluru, the city was brought under prohibitory orders till September 14.

A prominent transport company depot in the city bore the brunt with at least 30 buses going up in flames.

Managing Director of Salem headquartered KPN Tours and Travels Limited Rajesh Natarajan claimed in Chennai 40 of his buses were set on fire.

Incidents of arson came even as police said they have made elaborate security arrangements with 15,000 policemen being deployed, bolstered by Karnataka State Reserve Police, City Armed Reserve Police, Rapid Action Force, Quick Reaction Teams, special forces, Central Industrial Security Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force.

In view of the deteriorating situation, the Centre rushed 10 companies (about 1,000 personnel) of the special anti-riot paramilitary force RAF to Karnataka.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also called up Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu tonight and assured them all central assistance in handling the law and order situation.

After Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah spoke to Singh, an official statement issued in Bengaluru described the situation as "fully under control".

The Union Home Minister responded "positively" to the request for aditional central forces, it said.

Describing the violence in Karnataka as alarming, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa wrote to Siddaramaiah, seeking protection for Tamil speaking people and their property, hours after he had made a similar plea to her.

Reports of sporadic violence, Metro suspended in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Sep 12 (DHNS): The Cauvery river water dispute sparked off sporadic incidents of violence in parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Following Supreme Court’s refusal to suspend its earlier order on sharing Cauvery waters on Monday, Kannada activists blocked roads in several areas of Bengaluru raising slogans against Tamil Nadu.

Bengaluru Metro services have been suspended.

Miscreants were seen attacking vehicles and shops in different parts of the city.

Police had to lathi charge agitators twice at Satellite bus stand on the Mysore road. At least one lorry with Tamil Nadu registration was set on fire at Nayandahalli.

TV reports said schools and colleges are shutting down voluntarily, sending students home.

Cauvery row: Tamil outfit creates ruckus inside Karnataka Bank

Puducherry, Sep 12 (PTI) : Volunteers of a Tamil fringe outfit today barged into Karnataka Bank branch here and created ruckus, protesting against the ongoing agitations in the neighbouring state opposing release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, police said.

Around 25 workers of Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi entered the branch on Misson Street wielding broomsticks, banged them on the tables and asked the bank staff to vacate the premises. The staff ran helter skelter while the panic-stricken customers rushed out. Police men, who were deployed in the vicinity, rushed there and took the protesters into custody.

The bank was closed for a few hours after the incident and later reopened. However, it was again shut following advice from police. Earlier, volunteers and leaders of various Tamil outfits came in a procession and staged a demonstration a few metres away from the bank protesting against the Karnataka government and condemned the attack on a Tamil youth by a group of men in Bengaluru for allegedly posting "derogatory" remarks on social media against Kannada film actors.

Besides condemning the ongoing agitations in Karnataka over the Cauvery issue, the protesters shouted slogans against the Karnataka government, alleging that it had failed to protect the properties of Tamils there.

This fellow should be booked and sent to jail. BTW more violence of Karnataka side is because they are the affected party, TN is enjoying the decision given SC in their favour. So do not forget the violence was started by a tamil fellow. Regarding Yettinahole I am against if it has adverse effect on the environment.

Utter nonsense from this state govt and fringe group of demonstrators. What govt was thinking, don't know. There was clash on first verdict. Today was revised verdict. Why govt was not prepared to face situations. Sidda told farmers 3months back that farmers should not go for kharif as we don't have water. How come nariman says in SC that govt can't release water as it doesn't have water to kharif when Sidda already told not to go for that to farmers. Why govt already stipulated that they can release certain amount of water in affidavit to SC. Why govt told SC that releasing water will create law and order problem in review petition, to which court has to say that if that's the case then you are not capable of running govt. Why court in its judgment said govt's presentationfor review, and behavior of presentation is not proper?
I don't understand how govt can blame PM for this mess. One govt minister directly blames center for this. He wants Modi to solve this as he himself created this.
As a general public, I don't know whom to believe. Totally my state name is spoiling. Reputation has come down. America alerted its citizens who goes/are in Karnataka to take precautions. If this continues then this govt may not stay long. If you leave water then face anger of people. If don't leave water then contempt of SC, which in turn dis- qualify govt and force President rule.
Police not taking full action due to what happened to them in mahadayi protest time.

Hope our political leaders (of both the States as well as the Central Govt.) lead the way in bringing about peace, harmony, impartial justice regarding sharing of Cauvery river waters & reconciliation between the people of Karnataka & Tamil Nadu.

Why the state has not taken precautionary measures when they were aware something might go wrong after SC verdict today morning. Whether it is pro or against govt should have taken steps to control the anger of people. Loss to public property and people have to suffer.

When the resources are becoming scarce, pray God to increase the size of earth in proportion to population explosion. if he does not heed to your prayer. then at least use the logical sense to reduce human explosion. then automatically problems will subside. in Tulu there is one saying. " Kaarugu oithunda thareku barpuji. Thareku oithunda kaarugu Barpuji only option left is either cut the head or cut the feet it would also be good if somebody gave a bigger blanket.

We plan, they plan but Allah is the best planner. So it's a nonsense to fight cauvery water. It's my view, whatever we have must be shared equally.

I too agree that resources are to be shared fairly. for me when resources are getting scarcer, if we do not control the ever increasing human population, the per capita water resource will come down. We have been given a brain for thinking. God is not there to pat our back for foolishness.

if Allah is asking we can blindly give. it's not god / allah asking. it's the smart Amma is asking whom the whole world knows what she is. It's just the political agenda which is going on. One party assured Kavery water to one sector of the state... so irrespective whether they really need Kavery water or not... irrespective whether Karnatak is having enough water to share or not.. it's discussed and sentenced to share the water. It's absolute false statement that TN is having water scarcity. All the dams are full and irrigation is at it's best. On the other side, Karnatak has faced major problem this summer and unless precautionary measures are taken, state may face historic drought. But TN is led and represented by a very strong CM and very strong and supreme lawyers... where as Karnatak is led by a sleeping and arrogant CM and a very old and any time dying lawyer. That's the truth. But unfortunately public wealth is looted and destroyed, innocents are dying unnecessarily. All because of politics.

Who has provided resources, who has provided air, light, rain etc etc., it's only by Allah so we have to share equally whatever we blessed with natural resources. Fighting for water is a senseless attitude.
