Mangaluru: International Day of Older Persons observed in city

Mangaluru, Oct 1: The Dakshina Kannada Zila Panchayat observed International Day of Old Persons by honouring senior citizens in the Nethravathi auditorium on Saturday, October 1.

Minister for food and civil supplies UT Khader inaugurated the program.

In his inaugural address, Khader said, “The state government is making every effort to make the life of elderly persons better. Being healthy is the biggest challenge they face. Hence to make them smile better we have introduced Dantha Bhagya schemes to provide free Dentures for the ages persons below poverty line.”

Speaking on the occasion MLA of Mangaluru North constituency Moidden Bawa said, “We all know that the youth of the city have tainted city's image. When you were young the city was known for its religious and cultural harmony. Whenever you meet the younger generation you must invocate the values of harmony and brotherhood among them.”

MLA of Mangaluru South constituency JR Lobo in his address said, “You are the assets of our society. Every suggestion that you give for the betterment of the society and the city is valuable. You must keep in mind that through this celebration we want to give the message that we care for you.”

The dignitaries honoured elderly persons including centurion Michal D'souza, ex-army man Jayesh Shetty and many others.

General secretary of district legal services authority Mallanna Gowda, vice president of Zila Panchayat Kastoori Panja, Zila panchayat secretary NR Umesh, probationery IAS officer Gargi Jain, Mayor of MCC Hainath and others were present.

    Indeed it is a good gesture on the part of all concerned to felicitate senior citizens. They are our assets and they need all the possible help, support and encouragement.

    It would indeed be a hood idea to ask these seniors to keep their minds and bodies busy. That is another way of keeping young.

    The senior citizens who have been honoured, their names with age should have been released to the press.
