Mangaluru, Oct 3: A woman jumped into action immediately after scooter-borne men snatched away her chain, thus enabling the police to nab the culprits within two days. The incident happened within the limits of Bajpe police station.

A woman from Maravoor near Bajpe was walking by the side of Maravoor railway bridge on her way home after working at a packing centre at Bykampady on September 29, when she was approached by youngsters in a white coloured scooter. They extended their arms, snatched away the Karimani chain she was wearing, and sped away.

Although the woman raised an alarm, she could not stop the thieves from escaping. She got in touch with her neighbours over phone and informed them about the incident. The people immediately alerted the police, and also noted down the registration numbers of vehicles which came that way from the direction of Kavoor, Bajpe and Adyapady. The policemen kept a watch on the basis of these numbers. After two days, they could find the white scooter mentioned by the woman. The rider of the two-wheeler turned nervous during the questioning and was dithering from answering questions. When he was taken into custody on suspicion and interrogated, he revealed what had happened.

The accused happen to be Muhammed Hanif (26) from Mallur Demmale, and Imran (23) from Kavoor Ambikanagar. Hanif had started to live at Marakada Korantady Gudde since some time. It is said that Muhammed Hanif had studied Arabic at Kozhikode in the past and was teaching this language to students. Imran was an accused in the murder of Muhammed from Ambikanagar which had happened on October 7 last year. The arrested man said that the two had taken the stolen chain to Vamanjur for sale, but they found out that it was an imitation jewellery, not orginal. They thereafter threw it into bushes near Bondel mosque. The police went to the spot and recovered the chain.

Inspector of Bajpe station, Nagaraj, said that timing is of utmost importance and prompt reporting brightens chances of detection. He appreciated the initiatives undertaken by the victim and locals in nabbing the chain snatchers.
