Mangaluru, Oct 4: “Mangaluru City Police have invoked Goonda Act (The Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug-offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum grabbers Ordinance, 1985) against TP Abdul Rahim who is a habitual drug peddler from past five years,” said Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Chandrasekar.
He was addressing the press meet at his office here on Tuesday, October 4.
“TP Abdul alias TP Rahim, alias Rahim Goods Rahim, Kandi Rahim used to habitually supply and sell drugs near schools and colleges. City police had arrested him on Monday October 3 and sent to Bellary prison.
“The city police have already registered eight cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in the city. In which five cases are in the court and three cases are still being investigated,” commissioner said.
“We have identified other drug-offenders also. They are on our list and soon we will book them for drug peddling near schools and colleges premises on priority. For the first time in Mangaluru, city police have invoked Goonda act against a drug peddler," he added.
“Mangaluru City police have conducted 40 raids and identified 135 drug addicts in a year. They were sent to rehabilitation centre and for the next six months, they will be on our watch. Police have seized 94.21kg of Ganja and Cannabis and 70 grams of cocaine.
“As per our basic analysis, these drug addicts are peer groups of college going students and school dropouts. Addiction to drugs is curable with proper counselling. But many parents are afraid of social stigma and therefore do not send them to rehabilitation centres. People should come forward to give information about drug peddlers to police,” he explained.
Speaking about the theft at Kateel temple priest's residence, commissioner said, “As of now, it is pre-mature to reveal any details about the case. Dacoits had stolen 650 grams of gold and Rs 30,000 cash with a total of Rs 14 lac valuables.”
