Karkala: Mother-son deaths in Nitte fatal accident, dreams shattered

Daijiworld Media Network – Karkala (RJP)

Karkala, Oct 5: In the accident that shook the entire coastal belt, it is said that Shalet and her son Winson had gone to Mangaluru on Winson’s passport work.

Winson, who had secured a job in Gujarat after his mechanical engineering through campus selection, had come back home last month with the intention of going abroad for work.

Winson was about to leave for a foreign country on October 11, said family sources.

Earlier news

In a fatal accident that took place at Lamina cross near Nitte on Wednesday, October 5 between a car and lorry , two persons have died.

Shalet (47) and her son Winson (22) are the two persons deceased. Both of them were travelling in a Nano car while the son was driving.

Deceased Winson on left and Shalet on right

Shalet is the wife of Glorious Oil Mills owner Walter D’Souza from Jodukatte near Karkala and Winson is their son.

As per sources, the car was heading towards Karkala and the lorry was moving in opposite direction. The head on collision killed two instantly. Lorry driver who ran away from the spot later surrendered to police.

The dead bodies had to be retrieved with great difficulty with the totally damaged car.

Mother and son were returning with the car which was given for servicing in Mangaluru.

Winson's sister works in Hyderabad.

Karkala rural police arrived and took up the investigations.

It is better and safer to have dividers to cut down on overtaking if statistics are done, it will be found that many die due to overtaking on wrong side on double roads. Either make i tone way or use dividers to cut down fast speeding vehicles overtaking and causing deaths

It is the high time that the authorities implement traffic rules strictly. Driving licences should only be issued after completing a minimum 100 hours of driving classes under the supervision of the driving instructor and after passing the driving test. Strict implementation of such traffic rules is a must of the hour in order to stop such occurrence.

Very sad and unfortunate.. Once again a lesson for the State Transport Dept to ensure strict rules and drivers to have periodical assessment, black points, cancellation of driving licence for life etc should be in place to save these precious lives. All vehicles should be tested and certified by competent agencies for their road worthiness in all respects. There should be Zero tolerance with regard to safety of all concerned.

Unless and until having full confidence and experience on driving please do not take your cars to the Long distance on highways. Getting a license does not mean that we are expert drivers. It takes time to be an expert and to study the driving skills on road. Please use the public transport for long distance. In this case it looks like the boy just got his license and he is still new to the road. We have lost precious Souls. RIP

    Condolences to the bereaved...
    Now about car being vulnerable...
ONLY if every driver applies the required right mind while behind the wheel knowing the vulnerability of any vehicle in case of a mishap.. and being extra cautious due to our road conditions most of the accidents may be avoided... hence the wisdom is in every person behind the wheel beware of the fact and be concerned towards safe arrival rather than rushing to be early...

May these two souls rest in peace. Let us pray that family members get that Blessing, strength & Courage from God above to bear this terrible loss. No words to express our Sympathies.
Cars these days go fast, only when we drive them fast. Almost all cars have safety measures as per cars' Standard. So when we know we are driving a smaller car, we aught to be careful ourselves. I am sure this is because of high speed that has this kind of impact. When we advise our youngsters to drive carefully, drive slowly they dont listen. Look what happens.!
Let us not blame safety measures, bad roads, RTO in-discipline etc. It is our own Road manners, our driving skills, our responsibility towards our own safety & safety of others on road that matters.!!
May their souls rest in peace we pray.

Inspite of we reading so many accidents in newspaper on a daily basis we neglect the traffic rules and safety issues. If we go and stand on a highway and observe for half an hour we can realise that there are lot of traffic rule violations which might lead to an accident. Same is the case in any other roads.
Are we so busy or in a fast mode to ignore them and cost our lives? We should wake up.

It is time we realized that pushing for road safety reforms is more important than any cause, given that in India your loved one is most likely to be killed in a road accident. Not by a terrorist, not by a right wing fanatic and definitely not due to some of the issues you local parish priests are campaigning for. Get these unsafe vehicles off the road. Both local and international brands can and will make and sell unsafe vehicles in India because the rules and regulations allow them to. Strengthening and simplifying traffic law then implementing the same should be a priority. Chances are that the poor truck driver could have lost his life to mob lynching for no fault of his own. And the stupid Indian laws will lay fault on the larger vehicle without considering who is at actually fault. In this case the car was overtaking on the wrong side. Civic officials/ departments should also be made culpable when poor road design is at fault. E.g.: Why is there no barrier separating traffic on opposite sides? This is a highway not a city street?

May their soul rest in peace. And This is to those people who are talking about the safety of NANO. First of all if you are interested in F1 race please don't Nano n drive it on Indian roads, as its not meant to be. Of course it has less safety standards, that doesnt mean it isnt worth its rate!!! it is much safe if you drive any of your vehicle cautiously. Not just Nano, if any car is driven in a rash manner without following proper traffic rules it will end up being crushed. Dont people die in Fortuners, BMW, Audi, Benz, Innova? its all in ones mind how safe he wants to be!! If one can afford a Nano let him buy it n know its limits. Dont drive Nano as u would drive a Jaguar. every car has its own limits. If a person dies in Jaguar next thing people will say is, better buy a Hummer, if a person dies in Hummer people will say a Truck is safer. C'mon people grow up & stop talking abt vehicles & learn some traffic rules & Obey them.

    Thu, Oct 06 2016

Ok looks like you are some Nano salesman here! First thing,I am sure you have heard of "Science". (I am gonna spend my precious 3 mins for you, coz I am worried for people like you. You look like someone who would proudly take a NANO to F1) So, Nano is clearly not built for a highway where the speed limit is higher. Consequently, if anything goes wrong the impact is greater. It is made for within city limits, where there are speed bumps which can provide some cushion(Of course, I agree that accidents do happen within city limits.
Secondly, people do die in luxurious cars as well. But, they are called "Luxurious" coz of a lot of factors. One of them being strong body built. Infact, the non-luxurious ones do as well(Please note I am not saying that they are "Accident proof"). Nobody is blaming your favourite brand "NANO" here. They are infact blaming the built, which is justified for its pricing(I can see you grin now)
So, when you posting something like you did in the public platform, dont give in to emotions. There is no undermining driving skills. Safety should be given the foremost importance. But, the kind of vehicles we drive, the places where we are drive them all play a collective role. I hope you give a well informed advice coz words to influence. Hope, whoever reads it, makes a sane decision. And, please I am not saying not to buy a Nano(I see you grin again)but, use it safely within city limits.

..RIP..look at the car..Its a NANO totally unsafe car, its only suitable in interior places not on main road..Indian made cars (even foreign brands made in india) hardly passes 1 star in global safety test..

it is indeed sad to see young lives been lost for irresponsible attitude of road users, I was shocked to see in my last visit that bike riders using Helmet to their elbows, wearing seat belt is like DARPUK, following road manners is boring driving, this is what our attitudes are, we loose around 200,000 lives per year to road accidents... more than what we lost for world war/year. Today many of you show sympathy here are the same people have bad road manners. Our Govt is a disaster to human lives...... even God cant help us...CHANGE ..is the only solution we Hate, Rest in peace departed souls.. we are not ready to be humans for centuries to come. Driving is not a born right but Responsibility.

RIP. That is one poorly made car. Indian automobile companies avoid all safety measure just to cut car price and produce cheap car. Only a shining paint and nickel painted front grill is enough for Indian consumers, we never ever think about seat belt, airbags or crumple zones.

We cannot blame the car, whichever the car is, if it hits a heavy vehicle very rarely people survives. few years ago a politician died in an Fortuner after colliding to a truck. How it got crushed. Now can you say its a cheap car or poorly built. If a car passes safety measures also it does not mean that it can withstand the force of a truck. very Sad news for the family

My dear its not safety measure but Road manners,Any vehicle is not safe with bad driving, South Asians are very bad drivers, road rage and ego for silly things are very common, we need to learn driving. our RTO system is a silent killer, and than people dont think its for their own safety.
