Mangaluru: Shiradi Ghat to close for traffic from Oct 15

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 6: The authorities have decided to bring traffic on Shiradi Ghat stretch of national highway 75 to a complete halt from October 15 onward. The traffic will remain suspended till the second phase road concrete work is completed. Expected date of completion of work happens to be June next year.

As per the pre-condition, GVR Infrastructure, which has bagged the contract for Rs 89 crore, has already stocked materials required for road works. Officials said that once the vehicular movement comes to a halt, the development work of the 21 km tar road starting from Addahole will also be undertaken.

The new concrete road will be 8.5 metres wide. National Highways Authority of India officials are hopeful of completing the road work by June, 2017. The first phase of road work was undertaken and completed by Ocean Construction Co two years back. During that period too, traffic on this road has been blocked.

Although Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, B Ramanath Rai, has been insisting on allowing one-way traffic for light vehicles during the road works, officials feel that this might give rise to accidents on the road besides creating bottlenecks in road works.

Shiradi ghat section by itself is not a bottleneck. The approach roads from both the sides are. Hassan to sakleshpur is slow due to narrow road and it is a crawl from Uppinangadi to the beginning of the ghat. Resources are not being prioritised.

Whatever our Govt. undertakes Projects like this let them be completed within a shortest possible time or within the time stipulated without causing inconvenience to the public. After commencing Shiradi Ghat road work let them not tell that sand is not available for the work. Hence it is delayed etc.

For India to follow in Americas footsteps may be next to dream come true.
We are labor oriented country and providing jobs to unskilled people is always kept in mind. Fully mechanized jobs would curtail the scope for labor class. (It's my opinion). Things are done a gradual pace and not over -night trend. At least let them maintain the quality also.

I have seen in Melbourne-Australia that on their beautiful West Gate Bridge, the workers r in action during day & night time. Why these Corrupt people cannot close Shiradi Ghat one side for traffic movement while repairing the other side. The main intention of our Corrupt Contractors, Politicians & babus is only to make money on such projects & not to serve the people. Why they r starting this work now, when many NRI Mangaloreans & tourist r coming on holidays in December 2016/January 2017 & they want to travel on this Ghat Road.

It is time - HIGH TIME that Shirdi Ghat is repaired once for all and normal traffic resumed.

I have seen in Countries like America that whenever there is an emergence labour is pressed into work and repairs are carried out DAY AND NIGHT.

I hope such concepts are followed in India too

I doubt very much this relatively small stretch of road will be completed before June deadline looking at the track record of NHAI or PWD! For many countries better than this road will be 2 to 3 months!

Recently whilst on visit to Kasargod, I found that in the hairpin kind of bends, they have used replaceable concrete bricks rather than concrete or tar which perhaps makes it easily repairable. Not sure why this is not done in the Shiradi Ghat wherein the hairpin bends/curves get eroded fast.

More than 250 days for 21 KM!!!!The road which concreted(13 KM) last year also not complete or 100% roadworthy to commute. What happened to four lane via Shiradi Ghat? To close down such life line to head qtr,NHAI or State PWD did not upgrade nor repaired Charmadi ghat which is expected to accommodate maximum vehicle movement from Shiradi to Charmadi.

Yes, the eagerness to close the road is for cut the trees and make money out of it!!! Otherwise they can easily allow at least one way traffic for light vehicles. The ghat road is not too narrow like Charmadi to completely block it.
