Bengaluru, Oct 6: A meeting of environmentalists, organisations and leaders from both the coastal Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, who have been vehemently opposing the Rs 13,000 crore Yettinahole drinking water project, would be convened shortly, Karnataka’s Water Resources minister M B Patil disclosed on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, the minister noted that some sections of people in the coastal districts have some apprehension over the Yettinahole drinking water project.

He explained that the State Government had envisaged the project to meet the demand of the people of water-starved Tumakuru, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Bengaluru Rural and Ramanagara districts.

He tried to allay fears of the people of both the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts over the project.

“We will invite all the leaders including senior Congress leader B Janardhana Poojary and others, including the elected representatives of the region, who have raised some apprehensions over the project,’’ he said.

Terming the Yettinahole project, is one of the flagship programme of the State Government to find lasting solutions to the drinking water problems being faced by the Kolar, Chikkaballapur and other districts, the minister said: ``We will try to convince the people who are opposing the project.’’
