Mangaluru: Music legend Fr Walter Albuquerque passes away

Daijiworld Media Network-Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Oct 7: Music legend  and one of the most respected clergymen of land, Fr Walter Albuquerque passed away on Friday night of October 7 in city.

He was 93. He was a resident of St Aloysius College Jesuit community during his last years. He breathed his last at Father Muller's Hospital.

Fr Albuquerque was a  simple and down to earth Jesuit Priest, a well known music composer nicknamed as “Dhovi Kogul” (the White Nightingale) for his prodigious music talent and contribution to the music field. Fr Walter Albuquerque's contribution to the music field, both liturgical and social, is matchless and deserves highest accolades and recognition. As a music teacher and choirmaster in schools, convents and churches in undivided Mangalore diocese, he has left an indelible mark with his outstanding accomplishments. He has been instrumental in spotting and bringing to the fore many talented Konkani singers and thus helped popularizing Konkani language and music.

Most Konkani singers of Mangalore have been the product of the school of music called Fr Walter Albuquerque and these singers have acknowledged the quintessential role played by Fr Walter Albuquerque in shaping their music talent and career. Apart from training and spotting talents of others he has inspired many Konkani composers and singers including Konkani Kogul late Wilfy Rebimbus to take to Konkani music in a big way.

Born on December 8, 1923 in Bejai, Fr Albuquerque came from a family of talented musicians. His cousin John Sequeira was good in sight singing, organ and violin and was the choir master in Bejai church. Fr Walter learnt to read music and play organ and violin from him as he used to hold music practices every Sunday at the church. John’s brother Fr Charles Sequeira was also a good singer and composer and his association with his talented cousins helped him learn the nitty-gritty of music at a young age. Having picked up the talent for music he started writing songs for dramas and for providing entertainment.

Due to some unknown reasons Fr Walter had lost his voice when he was 14 and he was in this phase for nearly 5 to 6 years. But he strongly always believed that his unflinching faith in Mother Mary brought him his lost voice.

After his graduation, Fr Walter Albuquerque had joined the novitiate and at one stage he thought that would put an end to his tryst with music because in the novitiate the young members were required to stay away from musical instruments. But his novice Fr Patroni, who later became the Bishop of Calicut) made an exception to this rule in his case. He was permitted to take violin classes inside the novitiate and even encouraged him to play violin. This led to Fr Walter assuming the role of official organist when he went to Shambaganur for his Philosophy. With his penchant for innovations he brought in Carnatic melodies and tunes to Latin words.

With the Vatican bringing in use of vernacular languages in place of Latin, the hymns used during mass were changed to vernacular songs and here Fr Walter Albuquerque was able to demonstrate his music talent to the fullest.

When Fr Walter was transferred to Fatima House in 1967 he was put in charge of music there and here he invested his time and energy to improve Konkani Liturgical singing. He wrote hundreds of Konkani hymns for mass for different seasons of the year. Though hymns were coming from Mumbai periodically and were popular he composed hymns to match with those popular tunes and helpe popularize Konkani hymns in a big way. Being multi-talented he spent his time in writing hymns, printing them, preparing music for editions of the same in three voices, each of it in different schools and parishes.

Not content with just this, he founded “Sangeethalaya” at Fatima Retreat House with the main objective of providing a podium for training young musicians in vocal singing both Western and Indian style. Interested youngsters were also taught to learn musical instruments like Organ, Guitar, Violin, Tabla and Drums. Through Sangeethalaya he brought out many cassettes, thus giving a big encouragement to budding singers.

In 1993 Fr Walter Albuquerque was sent to Nagaland as a missionary among the Nagas and came back to Mangalore to renew his musical ministry.

Till the end he used his ministry for glory of God. Be breathed music all his life and on October 7 in 2016, this musical genius went to his creator.

    RIP Fr Walter Albuquerque.

I think for a very long time Mangalorean Catholics sang his compositions, his own and adapted by him, at mass and all liturgical celebrations, prayer services...at churches and homes...He really helped us all with spiritually uplifting melodies.

I always thought if Fr Walter had devoted some of his time, together with konkani, for compositions in Hindi, Kannada or English he would have received national awards. He is comparable only to the great musicians of India, who have received great honours at the national level, because I strongly felt that he had that great admirable talent and the top honours were due to him.

But he was very humble and saw Music as a path of service not for his glory but for glory of Lord- Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.

Great person . Thank you Fr Walter Albuquerque for the impact you had on me.

Heartfelt condolences to the entire Jesuit community, and all the near and dear one’s for the sad demise of our dear “ABBU” Rev. Fr. Walter Albuquerque S.J.

It was in the 70’s, when I was then in my teens, I met this “angel” who became very close to me. He was in Fatima Retreat House which fortunately is in Valencia Parish. We became friends. He spotted my singing skills and asked me to compose some hymns for him. This was when Latin being replaced by Konkani to the liturgy. That very day with his inspiration I composed 3 hymns (Vandhan Tuka Somiya, Undya Vaina Sovem & Ye Ye Jezu Mogalla…..) and many more since then. Also he asked me to compose the tune for “Sasnaso Vishev Sorvespora thaka laboi ani niranther prakas thacher fancoi” which is still being sung in Mangalore to this very date if I am not mistaken.

I have no words to express. I have lost my “Guru”. If at all I am known to the Konkani community, it is because of my Guru, Rev. Fr. Walter Albuquerque. I feel as if I have lost my right hand. Not only for music, he was there to help me for all my needs. I have lost someone who has been so close to me for the last 45 years.

With great sorrow and with grateful heart, I would like to sing for him from the bottom of my heart, “SASNASO VISHEV SORVESPORA THAKA LABOI, ANI NIRANTHER PRAKAS THACHER FANCOI”. AMEN.

I don’t think I would be wrong if I say that, He is a “LIVING SAINT”. Kind hearted, polite, soft spoken, humble, always smiling, and always helpful.

Fr. Walter Albuquerue was one of a kind. He was a musical legend and thru his talents he has mentored many other singers and musicians in and around Mangalore, including late Wilfy Rebimbos. He was highly respected by all the people who knew him and his musical talents.

I had the privilege of giving a portable organ several years ago to Fr. Walter Albuquerque on a Xmas night, and it was a surprise gift for him. He used the organ for many many years and also carried the instrument with him to the Altar while conducting the liturgical services. I was truly impressed Fr. Walter's love for music. He will be truly missed in the musical society of Mangalore because of his decades of dedication where he motivated hundreds of young men and women to get deeply involved in music. May he rest in peace.

Shocking news to hear that Fr. Walter Albuquerque is no more. What an Angel type of person he was! Simple, down to earth and very respectful to people of every age. Kind, honest and a great teacher of music. Mangaluru and especially Konkani Community lost a legend ever lived. May his soul rest in peace and may God Almighty grant his loved ones enough strength to bear this loss.

No words will suffice nor seem adequate to appreciate the humble and mostly generous service. Fr. Walter has rendered to the Konkany speaking worshippers in the area of liturgical music. Having had a small part in his 'musical itineraries' I am convinced his contribution to life of worship will outlive him by several generations. Although exceptionally talented his simplicity and humility enabled him to place all he had at the service of the Church. We often say, "And so with Angeles and Archangels..... we sing the hymn of your glory". Now we can confidently add, "and also with Fr. Walter". Pray for us Walter from your place in heaven. Born on the feast of Immaculate Conception gone home on the feast of Holy Rosary he was sure a true child of the Handmaiden of the Lord.

Sad to know that Fr Walter Albuquerque has passed away. Mangalorean Musical world has lost a big Jewel, who has been an Inspiration, a mentor, Tutor, Composer, Trainer, Choir Master and beyond. I myself remain grateful to him since he first taught me the Accordion at KRISTALAYA / SANGEETHALAYA at FATHIMA retreat house in 1975. I guess thousands, including me have gained a lot from him. Until his final days he has been attached with music in someway or the other as I had seen. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE WE PRAY.

I have heard much of Fr Walter Albuquerque, my second cousin...of his musical talent and his simple ways. I was privileged to meet him only twice, and he impressed me by his priestly spirit. May the Lord grant him a richly deserved reward. May the Lord be the solace of his family.

Heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family of Fr. Walter who has left to his heavenly abode. I have known Fr Walter during 1940s when he was a member of the Bejai Church choir. Late Mr. John Sequeira, his cousin was the choir master who was a well known violinist and Organ player. Fr. Walter had a melodious voice, a voice that was instantly distinguishable. Fr. Walter has dedicated most part of his life for the cause of liturgical music. If at all there is beautiful liturgical choirs in Mangalore and Udupi diocese the credit must go to Fr. Walter.

Fr. Walter was a talented composer like his cousins Fr William Sequeira and Fr Charles Sequeira who were also popular music directors. Fr. Walter was a seasoned organ player and a sweet violinist. I had the privilege and good fortune to play the violin and clarinet on various events and occasions. Fr. Walters friend and admirers will miss his melodious and heart touching music. It is a great loss to the music fraternity. My heartfelt condolences to my classmate Eddie Albuquerque and his brothers. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

During the Last Fifty Years since the Second Vatican Council Liturgical Music in the Coastal Karnaka had an angelic flavour. Much of the Aggiornomento Music had a sacred tempo. There was so much of joint effort from the Clergy, Religious and the Laity for the meaningful celebration of the Liturgy. Father Walter had a great role to play in the post-conciliar era in the coastal belt of Karnataka. His greatness was wrapped in Christian Humility and Simplicty for the Greater Glory of God. Hay His Soul Rest in Peace.
