Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 8: After a motor bike hit barricade put up by the police at Suratkal on the night of Friday October 7, two tiger dance artistes, who were on the motorbike, sustained serious injuries.

File photo

Both the injured artistes are from the city. They had performed tiger dance till late evening around Kaup and were coming back to the city to return the skull portion of their costume. They were trying to overtake another vehicle when their vehicle collided with the barricade, eyewitnesses said. The motor bike thereafter dragged the barricade with it for some distance before stopping, it is gathered.

Locals say that the barricades set up across the highway have been giving rise to accidents as they are not removed even at night and they have not been fitted with reflector lights. At night vehicles coming at high speed fail to see the barricades many a time. Traffic police too say that several barricades have become unusable after having been hit by a number of vehicles.

A case about the accident stands filed in city (north) traffic station, on the basis of complaint filed by a local, Vijay Poojary Beluvai. Identities of the injures are yet to be ascertained.

Putting up barricades on a open highway is the most absurd thing I have seen in my whole life.

Our traffic cops do not even have the least common sense when it comes to maintaining smooth and safe traffic flows on the high ways.

In highways barricades are to save some and to kill some. This is the standard of Indian traffic rules. Still we are not feel shame to name smart cities. None of the Indian city will qualify as smart city if is measured as per international standard.

Barricades are a good method to prevent overspeeding However they should be placed carefully and well lit so that highway drivers can see it. I feel every time I read about an accident It makes my heart cry!

In the past too I had brought to the notice of the authorities haphazard way barricades are placed on highways. In Farangipet three were placed as if testing driving skills of motorists, who had to move in "Z" fashion, which later were removed with a single now. They were placed during elections & they got in there permanently before being removed.
If one moves to Mangalore from B C Road one encounters many such barricades near institutions & religious places on single road without giving enough space for bigger vehicles to manoeuvre safely.
Hope they increase the distance between barricades & remove un-necessarily placed getting removed to prevent future accidents.

Traffic Dept. has no sense...Neither they remove barricades nor sign/lights are displayed during night hours. But toll gates have all required signs/displays working fully.

Haphazardly placed barricades r nothing but death traps, to kill innocents!!

Many places they might been kept during the times of communal unrest, for spl information based checking etc., but somehow they r left in that place like orphans! Many a times the locals might be shifting it here n there for their convenience w/o anybody to question them!!

The people who leave them w/o any warning signs/lights r the most irresponsible ones, they do not even deserve to claim salaries for such callousness towards innocent travelers!

Incidentally barricade menace is mostly in DK, not found in Maharashtra etc.!!

Those seriously injured should immediately follow up with the top authorities and claim heavy compensation, also pull those responsible to courts for compensation!!

AND WE CLAIM WE R A BUNCH OF SMART PEOPLE LIVING IN A SMART CITY WHEN SUCH FOOLISH THINGS OCCUR?

    JAI DK!!

It is to be seen the utility and usefulness of barricades. In the fitness of the situation it is my opinion that barricades are put up for the safety of the people. Of course the police will investigate the utility of this safety measure and if it is counter-productive I have no doubt that these will be done away with.

Two wheeler drivers and three wheel drivers should take utmost care for their safety and safety of others. It is extremely necessary that these vehicle drivers should refrain overtaking from the left.

These barricades are illegal and are death traps.

Barricades where required for slowing down/stopping traffic or for security purposes need to be manned by police/security personnel and must have proper visibility markings as well as flashing amber/red lights.

The issue has been raised with the authorities in the past, but sadly has fallen of deaf ears!

I hope the two injured will file a case against those who erected the barricades and claim hefty damages! Only a hefty punitive fine will bring some sense into lazy officials who put up unmanned barricades!!!

Hopefully, the DC, RTO and police will now wake-up, but does it take a serious accident or the loss of life for these officials to get a wake-up call?

This is serious issue to be alert by the RTO/traffic and public.

I have noticed lot of area like putting barricade without reason and by the nearby some irresponsible public.

My understanding is if it not required some time at night , as a public service and better concern, we the public should keep the barricade side or remove and day time if it is required install. It will be help save precious life and some time causing injury and even death.

Please give comments and make awareness among intelligent daijiworld readers.
Even we can see many humps without any zebra cross or white colour at least.

Why do Police do such stupid thing such as putting up barricade on a national highway? They are dangerous. They do not increase safety atall. If they really care about safety of the people they should design the roads in such a way that they reduce the chances of accident.
