Dubai begins building 'world's tallest' tower, to complete in 2020

Dubai, Oct 11 (AFP) : Dubai began construction work on a tower that will stand higher than its Burj Khalifa, which is currently the world's tallest skyscraper.

The Gulf emirate's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, marked the groundbreaking of The Tower at Dubai Creek Harbour as construction workers laid foundations for the skyscraper at a vast patch of sand.

The structure "will be the world's tallest tower when completed in 2020," said a statement issued at the ceremony.

Dubai's developer giant Emaar Properties announced plans to build the viewing tower in April, saying it will be "a notch" higher than Burj Khalifa, which stands 828 metres (2,700 feet) high.

Emaar has not revealed the exact final height of the tower. It said in April that the structure will cost around USD 1 billion.

Designed by Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava Valls, the tower will have observation decks providing 360-degree views of the coastal city.

Emaar Chairman Mohamed Alabbar said the tower will completed before the Expo 2020 trade fair which Dubai is preparing to host.

In April, Emaar said the tower will be slender, evoking the image of a minaret, and will be anchored to the ground with sturdy cables.

Dubai has established a reputation for building dozens of futuristic skyscrapers, which have transformed its skyline.

Saudi Arabia's Kingdom Holding is building a tower in Jeddah that is planned to surpass the Burj Khalifa, rising more than a kilometre.

@Lydia - so what if they do not give me or the other expats citizenship? At least they care for the expats ! At least we feel secure during our tenure in the Middle East. It is very easy to criticize other country when our own country is facing problems which nobody has a solution. First let us clean our own place , the corruption here and then start talking about other countries. And what if UAE is raising high building's? I mean seriously what is wrong in it?? Are we not building churches worth crores here in Mangalore itself?? We cannot see our own back. So before you talk endless negativity about another country, start talking about your own!

Why is Lydia being so critical. At least in Middle East I feel secured because of the strong leadership of the ruler unlike Mangalore where people stare for no good reason and gossip like they own us. People in UAE , pay certain fee and in return they do good to us. What is happening in Mangalore?? Just go and check the roads. You are paying taxes . Don't you? What are the minister's doing with it??? Let us clean our own plates instead of checking other's plates and stop being over critical!!

    Queenie,

Will UAE allow you to stay there for ever ? You got to come to the place you are criticising so much, unless of-course you seek citizenship elsewhere.

Therefore, India may it be dirty and corrupt but we belong here. Nobody can throw us out of here, like the heaven you point out today would do to you some day.

Please go and talk to your own corporator/minister's etc and set the facilities right. Better start cleaning our own problem's than digging other's! It is pathetic to see people criticizing when their own country and particularly own city is facing enough issues.

    Edward,

Its certainly not the hard earned money of UAE citizens. When a city offers services, people are ready to pay through their nose. Just enquire with someone how much per month they pay as road-toll and radar/traffic violation/parking fines.

There are crazier people who pay in Millions just to be in the news. One example is what I cited below. However, the dynamism is in utilising the revenue in best way, which exactly UAE is doing.

With dynamic leaders at the helm, a nation can go to any heights to break records. Especially if the nation houses people ready to pay as much as Rs. 90 crores for just a specific number plate.

God bless UAE, that gave bread to millions of poor from the entire world.
