Kochi, Oct 11: Subahani Haja Moideen, believed to be an Islamic State (IS) operative, was brought to Thodupuzha on Monday, October 11, by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Subahani was arrested in Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu recently and it is alleged that he had received training in foreign land and was looking after the recruitment for IS in India.

Subahani had not visited Thodupuzha in Kerala for years after he left that place for Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu where he worked. But his parents and siblings still stayed in Thodupuzha.

Subahani was taken to his house at about 11.30 am on Monday by a five-member NIA team led by SP Shaukat Ali. The team visited the house including the room where Subahani stayed. His two brothers were called by NIA who disowned him saying they were not in touch with him for the past three years. At this time Subahani was told wait in the vehicle brought by NIA.

But there was no proper security for Subahani there except a few police personnel. BJP and RSS activists, who came to know that Subahani was brought there, gathered near the vehicle and started shouting slogans. Though the vehicle was safely moved to the next compound, NIA officials had a tough time controlling the mob. There was a possibility that Subhani could have been assaulted by the mobsters. Subahani could have also fled from the spot as he was very familiar with the place.

Later it was alleged that Kerala police failed to provide adequate security when NIA brought an accused to Thodupuzha. But senior police officials said that NIA gave them only 5 minutes notice to provide security. As such, they sent only a sub inspector and few police personnel to provide security. But when additional police personnel were sent, NIA had already finished their work and had left with Subahani.

It is said that NIA collected some evidence in Thodupuzha, of which details are not known.

Subahani family, originally from Tirunelveli, had shifted to Thodupuzha 40 years back. But Subahani who was trained computer engineer had left home and shifted to Tirunelveli some years back. He worked there as a salesman when he was arrested.
