Mangaluru, Oct 12: A domestic help and her husband who were trapped in a well near Holy Family School at Bajpe here were saved by fire brigade personnel. The couple were saved because of the fact that their daughter alerted others in time about the tragedy in the making. The incident occurred on Tuesday October 11 morning.

Bibi Jan (80), wife of the late Bava Jan Saheb, stays alone in her house near the said school. As her children have settled elsewhere, they had hired the services of a couple, Hussain and Pyari Jan from Hiriyur, Chitradurga district, to attend to routine work and help their mother. The couple have been here since the last three months, and they have a daughter, Seema (8).

Pyari Jan (23), working as domestic help in the house of Bibi Jan alias Meharunnisa at Bajpe was trying to set right the dysfunctional pump set fitted to the well when she slipped and fell into the well. Her husband, Hussain (25), rushed to help his wife and jumped into the well. He too got trapped there. Seema alerted the neighbours who then sounded Bajpe police and fire brigade.

When the pump set was switched on, it did not pump out water on Tuesday morning. Pyari Jan was trying to repair it when she slipped and fell into the well. Her husband, Hussain, saw this incident and jumped into the well in an anxiety to rescue his wife. By then the rope tied to the rod across the well had been severed.

Seema saw this accident, and immediately conveyed information to some shopkeepers nearby. They in turn, got in touch with the local police and fire brigade. Although effort was made by them to lift the couple with the help of chair tied to the end of ropes, locals did not succeed. Fire brigade personnel from Kadri then arrived and brought out the two from the well.

The couple were found to have suffered minor injuries. They were provided treatment at the primary health centre at Bajpe. But for the timely action by Seema, the lives of her parents would have faced danger, as there were no adults near by to help than other than 80-year-old Bibi Jan.

Following are the golden words Mr. Modi expressed in Dusherra rally in Lucknow:
“Today as we celebrate Dussehra, the world is celebrating International Day of the Girl Child”
And a couple (parents) is saved by their daughter. It’s an eye opener for many who………….
More than everything I am so touched by the courage and quick action shown by the husband.
He jumped into the well without any fear or second thought to the dangers to his life to save his wife. This is love & humanity to the second half. God bless this family.
