Mangaluru: Yettinahole - Centre permits to cut down trees, bamboo groves

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 13: With the department of forest and environment giving its clearance to cut down 4,995 trees and 1,332 bamboo groves spread over 14 acres of forest in Sakleshpur, Hassan district, decks have been cleared for the project to move ahead. The trees and groves so cut have been ordered by the state government to be stocked in the timber yard at Hassan. The actual measurement of timber and firewood so got need to be got certified by deputy forest conservator before shifting them to the timber yard.

The progress of Yettinahole project, which proposes to provide drinking water to Kolar, Chikkamagaluru, and Bengaluru urban districts against which various organizations have been agitating and fighting, was facing stumbling block in the form of non-clearance of the state's proposals to clear forest areas. There were allegations that scores of trees were cut down without obtaining prior approval of the ministry of environment. There are a few cases against the project before National Green Tribunal. The state had given an undertaking to the tribunal not to cut down trees without getting clearance from central government. The tribunal is likely to issue its final orders relates disputes raised shortly.

The forest ministry however, when approving the proposal of Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Ltd to clear the forest in around 14 acres of forest, has placed conditions that the area should continue to remain under forest department after project execution, steps should be taken to hand over land that is equal in size to forest department where forest should be grown, after completing works, about 40 hectares of land considered as dumping area should be restored and developed as forest after completion of works, water should be pumped only between June 15 and October 31 every year, etc. A total of 53 conditions have been set out by the department, it is gathered.

The Central Govt. has accorded permission to cut 4995 trees and 1332 bamboos in Sakleshpur Reserved Forest. That means the Central Govt. has given green signal to the project. Then why this protest. CM Siddu is safe now.Meanwhile some activists raise hue and cry not to cut trees at Padil (deemed Forest) for the construction of DC's Office. Todays local paper says Ramanath rai, Forest Minister has directed to take up construction work on the basis of Govt. order. So when the State Govt. accorded sanction for construction of DC Office building what anybody cant do?

You dont find this sort of pure water anywhere else in India except the western ghats. Its our only chance we need to stick to our point and not allow anyone steal our natural resources. It our only chance. Once the pipe line is placed there is no way we can object or protest. These politicos are taking all DK people for a ride and fooling us. What are our local politicians doing about it.

Anyone who supports this cause will be surely supported in the next election.

Just a few days ago, the CM said Nethravati River will not be diverted. Then what is the need to cut down thousands of trees? Are they fooling the people? Now it seems all are hand in glove to implement this multi-crore project. Cutting trees has to stop, otherwise it will be disastrous.

This is a very good opportunity for people to make money from the sale of timber that will be mercilessly cut down. I call the cutting down of the trees an act of cruelty against mankind. This is the worst form of anti-national activities. Whoever has given the approval for the cutting down of the trees should be kicked out and thrown into the gutter. I don't know who he is but he is such an insidious vandal, unfit to be called a human being. By the way, don't we have a fellow called Nalin Kateel who is from the ruling party? Where is he these days? What happened to all his drama?
