Mangaluru: Traffic police assaults youth who objected him using mobile phone during duty

Daijiworld Media Network- Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Oct 14: In an incident that happened on Wednesday October 14, a traffic police constable was seen assaulting a youth, who objected him talking over mobile phone instead of controlling traffic.

The entire incident was filmed and now has gone viral. City police commissioner Chandra Shekar, who came to know about the incident, has ordered an enquiry even though no official police complaint has been lodged so far.

As per details of the case, when the whole city was celebrating Navaratri on Wednesday, a traffic police in the famous Car Street was talking over his mobile phone instead of controlling the traffic. A group of youth, who were passing by, criticised the policeman for not doing his duty promptly. The police who heard this got angry at once and pounced on a youth from the group and assaulted him indiscriminately. The angry policeman used abusive words also. Other members of the group, who could not do anything as the person involved was a police, filmed the incident in a mobile phone.

The policeman tried to snatch away the mobile phone from the youth, but failed. Somehow the youth managed to flee from the spot.

Many social activists in city have condemned the incident. The policeman is attached to the Mangaluru South police station.

They know the duty is tough & have to discharge their duties in the hot sun or rain, then also they join the police department. WHY???? Why he has to get frustrated or angry when somebody finds him doing wrong when he is on duty. Nobody tells him not to use his mobile phone. But there is a limit for everything. Why this has to happen only in INDIA. Only Indian police gets angry or frustrated.

Many such instances are noticed here and the traffic cops talking over phone derelicting their traffic control duty. In some places they chit-chat with the lady traffic police or with their friends. Considering the present trend of traffic jam and heavy traffic the traffic cops should bestow their attention to their respective duties and not derelict their duty. I have seen a lady traffic police near Bendur well talking continuously over phone and not attending her duty.

The policemen should be suspended pending enquiry and dismissed from service if found guilty. When Policemen can armtwist the government the cannot be allowed to subvert law in their favour. High time that protection to government servants on duty is withdrawn and they are treated on par with civilians working in private companies.

After the arrival of mobile phones, we cannot say that a person on duty should not talk on mobile. May be the circumstances make us to talk. If we say police should not talk on mobile phones while on duty then it is binding on us also where we are working. Banning the mobile on work places, then the purpose of a mobile gets defeated.I pity the police. Standing for hours in the sun or rains, they do their duties.Whereas we sit under fan or
AC and complain about them. If I can do their duty for one day, then I will understand why they are angry and frustrated.

There are several traffic cops who brave the rain and hot sun to control traffic! Then there are other cops like this, who are always on mobile. You can see them at various points in the city at different points in time - Bharath Mall, Lalbhag signal, KPT junction, PVS junction and several other places, sitting in the shade and closely monitoring their mobiles instead of controlling the traffic. Many a times, good Samaritans take the initiative of clearing the traffic jam, while these people are mute spectators.

Now that Mangalore City Traffic Police have launched the initiative where citizens can whatsapp them the pictures of traffic violations, hope we can send them the pics of cops in dereliction of duty as well!

Traffic police is there to control the traffic & not to chat during duty hours. These kind of things happens everywhere specially in Jyothi Circle junction. Either the police constable will be sitting on his bike & enjoying the traffic blocks or he will be chating in the phone. If he cant control the traffic then what is the use of he being in the traffic department. Higher ups pls take necessary action against these kind of incidents.

A Citizen has no right to say to a Traffic police don't speak in the Cell phone/Mobile phone.

The Traffic Police may be speaking to higher authorities or attending some important calls from someone.

A CITIZEN HAS A RIGHT TO TALK AS HE EXPRESSED HIS RIGHT TO SPEAK. HE SCORED SOME MARKS FROM THE PUBLIC AS HE DIDN'T BEAT HIM BACK IN RETALIATION.

THE TRAFFIC POLICE HAS NO RIGHT TO BEAT ANY PERSON UN-NECESSARILY.

MOREOVER THE TRAFFIC POLICE SHOULD ALSO MIND HIS LANGUAGE. SIMPLY ABUSIVE IS NOT GOOD FOR HIS JOB.

There is serious need to educate the policemen of traffic rules first. I was surprised the way in mangalore how police control traffic. Do they know the rules? The police men in question here might be talking over phone officially? who knows? they are also frustrated of long duty hours and if anyone criticizes them, they take out their anger. But the policemen should be definitely charged for the assault. Who gave police the rights to assault?

As if our uncivilised citizens follow traffic rules and obey the police. Before reacting the people should investigate whom the police was talking to.It may be control room or some personal emergency.People have become very rude and violent impatient now a days.

No doubt, there is shortage of police
to do duty. However, I have seen in Hubli, many traffic joints are not manned. In a few cases, a few police people join together to discuss least minding traffic and those who jump the signal.

I always thought the traffic police constables caught riders without helmet or talking on the phone when riders are riding a two wheeler. But in this case the constable is after pedestrian's. The police should first see to it if the pedestrian's can walk on the footpath's in Mangaluru without being obstructed by a four wheeler ,two wheeler or anything obstructing pedestrian's while using the footpath. Some of the constables are not bothered if a car is parked on a footpath.

We do not know to whom he was talking, and if it was making him to unable to perform his duties, it is not acceptable. But, naturally he got angry as it was none of their business to comment on him.

Rules are for the general public. Often we see drivers of police vehicles driving without uniform. Sometimes the Sub Inspector or Circle Inspector direct their jeep drivers to stop vehicles etc. This happens even with the RTO jeeps on the Highway. The drivers act like constables and even abuse the vehicle owners. This nonsense should stop.I hope our Commissioner of Police reads this note.

This has come to the notice of The Commissioner of Police and he will indeed take appropriate action.

It is pertinent to point out that the Traffic Police have a duty to perform and they should not divert their attention to an other area. Here is a case when perhaps the policeman was talking a duty officer but he had no right to assault the youth. What is good to see and hear is the fact that the other friends of the victim present exercised their constraint and did not make an attempt to retaliate.
