Kundapur, Oct 15: The recent outbreak of rat fever in Kundapur has been a cause for concern among locals. A woman reportedly affected by it died here. Ravi, a youth from Koteshwar is also suspected to have died due to it on Wednesday. The fever had created anxiety in Thekkatte Kumbhasi earlier.

Though the epidemic is spreading rapidly for months, effective awareness is lacking.

Kundapur taluk medical officer has said that awareness programme, sprinkling of medicine to the wells in the affected areas and preventive measures among farmers in the affected areas are being undertaken.

There are allegations that the administrative machinery has failed to contain the fever. Most people affected by the fever only go to medical shops and obtain medicine. Therefore the epidemic has spread.

The germs of the fever come out through the urine of affected rats. They enter human bodies through injuries in legs or through drinking water. The fever spreads easily in paddy fields, rice mills and forest areas with dry leaves. The germs are also found in bandicoots, cats, dogs and some other wild animals. The germs in them mix with water through their faeces and urine. The germs also enter human bodies through drinking water.

The fever appears within 4 days and the symptoms are muscles pain, body pain, pain in the head, bleeding from the mouth, nose and urinary infection.

There are just a few points that I feel moved to make here.

Leptospirosis, the medical term for 'rat fever' is not always accompanied by raging fever until an advanced stage. That is what
makes it difficult for doctors to arrive at a diagnosis. The symptoms are so vague and general that they could well characterize a wide range of illnesses.Doctors, unfortunately, often mistake it for viral fever, leading thereby to tragic consequences.

Further, it can be contracted by doing something as innocuous as walking through puddles of rain. Therefore, one should have well-shod feet at all times, but particularly during the monsoons. and one should avoid gardening or digging the earth during the rains. In every instance of leptospirosis that I have learnt of, the victim was performing some kind of manual labour during the monsoons. It would serve us well to bear this in mind the next time someone breaks out with a fever that resists diagnosis and refuses to resolve itself.

    Finally, God bless us all.

Problem with Indian people is that most of us dont take preventive measures both in and out of our houses or in hotels etc. How many times I tell my parents, spouse relatives, friends, colleagues and hotel staffs to be clean and hygienic, but they never listen. Though it is very simple most of the people r not ready to change. In DK & Udupi dist wells are common in most of the houses. But most of us dont put nets or cover their wells. So many dirty things fell in open wells leading to various diseases, but nobody cares. They just go to doctors spend money for doctors and medicine. It is better if govt make strict rules regarding this matter amongst other matters.
